I've been trying, for the life of me, to find a decent sweater for a while now. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any that don't pill all over the place and otherwise fall apart after a few wearings. I typically wear very basic wool, or occasionally chunky cotton sweaters through fall and winter. Solid colour, crewneck with the occasional V etc. thrown into the mix; scratchiness is less of a concern as I always wear a long sleeved shirt underneath anyhow. I'm kind of at the end of my rope, and thought J Press might be a good place to go, my budget is $100-$200 ea.
What are your thoughts on their knitwear? Could you recommend any other sources for a decent sweater?
J Press knitwear is excellent, for example their Shetlands are made by Lawrence J Odie one of the best makers in the Shetland Isles. However you will pay a premium at J Press and might Hand over less at John Simons who get theirs from Jamesons I believe (equally good maker). For lighterweight lambswool sweaters I've been pleased with Alan Paine, they wash and wear well.
Ebay for Pringle and Smedley, if you want a cheaper alternative to a Shetland. If not then check one of the Shetland threads.
I'm actually selling a couple of beautiful cashmere sweaters at a bargain price over on eBay if you're interested?
Depends on the size.
you might try Bahle's, they have Harley of Scotland Shetlands for decent prices, on sale at the moment ..........

I've been nowhere but Drakes in recent years mainly cos you can try before you buy as you can guarantee 5 of the same item will all fit differently...
Is Smedley any cop these days?
Have a lot of old stuff but not bothered with em for yonks now..and what with "that logo" creeping onto proceedings... so miss Berk Cashmere for Smedley oddities..
I occasionally find a (relatively) cheap Smedley somewhere, ime they're the same as ever, however as always we have to remain vigilant.
I'm also selling a few of my Harley Shetlands.....what size are you after?
Many thanks for all of your responses, fellas. I only just had a chance to sift through them all now.
Uncle Ian, I'm a big boy - so 46 is the order of the day. Most XLs are in that range.
