Tweed season's just begun and I'm already thinking about spring/summer suits.
Cuffs on tropical wool suits? What say you: Yea or nay?
I'm always for cuffs on thicker fabrics, but wondering if the light, casual nature of tropical would fare better without them.
/\ yes, trousers made of the lighter fabric benefit in my opinion from cuffs ....... if you like cuffs do it, you probably won't be sorry ......
But of course .... it makes them hang better.
I picked up a pair of summer weight wool trousers from my new Russian alteratoress yesterday, one and three quarter inch turnups. It's the only way.
Besides aesthetics, the fact that they'll hang better has won me over. Cuffs it is, but maybe at one and a half inch since I'm a mere 5'7". Thanks guys.
On the subject of cuffs, since woof mentioned 1.75" and kyle says 1.5"... I recently cuffed a pair of corduroys myself and decided to follow the OPH and go for 1.25" cuffs. Lands End cuffs their pants at 1.5", I'm nearly 6 feet and I think that looks good... But I have to say an inch and quarter looked pretty spiffy. Don't think I'd do it for a suit or chinos but on cords it looked nice...
For the same reasons stated above, I keep all my lightweight pants with a cuff. They become slightly less floppy with the added weight. I never cared about the width of the cuff until this year when I switched to the 1.75" cuff and, honestly, I will never look back. I don't think it really matters how tall you are. The beefiness of the 1.75" cuff is ideal to my eye.
Just to add, I read a lot about cuff width relative to height, but like LeeLo, I have a feeling this doesn't matter so much as cuff width relative to the leg opening width.
For example, around 1.25" cuff width looks great on my slimmer legged 60s khakis (around 7.6in), and in fact that's the width they were originally made with, but on suit and odd wool trousers (above 7.6in), it just starts looking weak.
I'm beginning to feel material and pant width is much more important than height when deciding cuff width.

I’ve always felt that turnups on trousers are one of those little touches ghat mark you out as someone who takes an interest in what they are wearing.
My tailor screwed up once and did 1.5". Definitely lacking (although I still wear them). 1.75" is far superior.
If I had any jeans I'd probably still go for 1" (mod for life).
the caveat being if it's a slimmer cut trouser - then you are entering Thom Brown territory but on a trouser with 8" cuff then yes for sure.
Unfortunatley for me I recently acquired a stunning pair of Levis Sportwear gabardine trousers but the leg was a 26", luckily there was fabric to let the leg out but not enough for a cuff, so I have this pair and a lovely pair of Levis Stags of a similar late 50s early 60s vintage that are sans cuff. I don't feel they loose anything for not having the cuff.
5cm cuffs on my chinos, not sure what that is in inches but feels right.
I'm curious.
1.75" guys: how tall are you?
