Horizontal striped ties

“Ed Vaizey (Wantage and Didcot) was in orange socks and, like George Freeman (Mid Norfolk), wore the sort of horizontal-striped tie favoured by middle-aged groovers going through a crisis.”
Quentin Letts describing various MPs

Jon Snow The newsreader is presumably too old for this description

Re: Horizontal striped ties

I quite like some of John Snows ties, not those though. Infact I'm quite a fan of  horizontal-striped silk knits, think that Jules bloke who does the drakes ads.

Not all middle aged men want to dress like Mr. Letts. I know I don't.

“That Jules bloke” is a complete tosser though.

Nothing to do with a ‘crisis’ though, he was always like that. Jim had a lot of time for him.

/\  the silk motley striped ties he's wearing in those pics are particularly horrible ... horizontal stripes can work fine on knit ties though as we know .....

Re: Horizontal striped ties

Jon Snows ties are awful IMO the worst and most inconceivably shit uses of colour I've seen.

However whether JJ is a prick or not, Drakes make very nice ties.

Sometimes New & Lingwood hit a sweet spot better "wacky" van buck style and tasteful Drakes but not all the time.

And yes to classic mid-century ties especially ones that appear to capture the mood of a rothko in slub silk.

Re: Horizontal striped ties

I can't comment on what Jules is like, I've never met him. Jim had a lot of time for a few people with a working class accent, Jules, John S, Kevin Rowland, ect. I think its maybe part novelty and part feeling safe in the knowege these other boys won't lock him in a cupboard.... What they thought of him we can only guess, what?

Jules wears it well in the Drakes ad. I wonder if he gets to keep the clothes?

/\ nice in the summer

Rooster had some good ones I see

J. Press had a strong line in Indian raw silk repp stripes years ago, those weren't horizontal but they were indestructible and great

they still have some Indian raw/slub silk ties but the colors are very pastel, the one I got in the early '80s was easy to wear with cotton poplin summer sack patch 3/2 wash and wear suits

just wore an old navy/green striped open-weave knit wool square-end tie the other day, got it new years ago, and now it's vintage ... not mid-century though, '80s Ivy/prep, made in England, 70/15/15 new
wool/angora/mohair, a chilled tie that goes with everything in the fall and winter ....

The trick with ties, sometimes, is to find patterns and colors that arent that odd but drive insecure, uptight men crazy. Almost without an exception, men who get bothered by nicely designed ties that are vivid in color and/or pattern are powerless, sour C*&#s.

What if we don't want them following us angrily into restrooms, though?

this is why I've always liked some of my more random emblematics ... the emblematic truly is the king of ties for confounding powerless, sour C*&#s ....

but back to the horizontal striped tie, here are some nice ones, just call White, they have two locations:

Think of it like this, there are stunt pilots who land back on the ground safely and there are stunt pilots who crash in a huge flaming fireball. Only difference with clothes is if you get it wrong youre not dead at the end of it!

I should've peed on his shoes. I actually did do that in college to someone who went on to become a Navy Seal. Mind you, he was wearing loafers with no socks.

No, just pitchers of beer and I wish they had been suede! I think they were cordovan penny loafers...and I've heard washing them with urine brings out a certain patina, or is it peetina?

Alden offers this as part of its cordovan refurbishing service for around a hundred dollars so pretty sure you did him a favor.
