Hi Chris, ooh a few sizes too small for me unfortunately or I would of bagged it from you promptly. Darn it!

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

I've just taken advantage of a 15% LL BEAN promotion and purchased a cotton polo neck and a fleece lined warm-up jacket.

My plan was to wear them to the NFL on Sunday but the ETA is sadly after the game.

There were lots of interesting items worth considering including ragg wool sweaters, tartan flannel shirts (albeit with small collars) and a superb early eighties reissue puffa jacket.

I’m liking the look of the reissued ‘82 Baxter State Parka’ with a 60/40 shell.

I don't do Instagram or Facebook but I could see the dead stock Levi cords if that's what the find is.

Very retro look on the hot climes stuff too.

On Facebook I can usually see the first page. So no good for restaurants where all their info is on there.

That’s them KingstonIan, really looking forward to wearing them.

Thanks for the feedback on my holiday shots, had a lovely holiday visiting my in-laws in the tropics of the Mayan peninsula through most of September, missing that pool and the sunshine.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

I just bought a Kama VI twill popover.

It went straight back as it was absolutely huge.

I must admit that I find their shirts pretty inconsistent on sizing.

In the Summer I purchased the seersucker popover in L and the fit was much better.

I love the details and pricing but I'm loosing patience with the Japanese sizing.

Why does a shirt labelled as 16 have a collar of 16'5?.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

That’s frustrating did you buy direct or from All Blues?

I’ve not bought any since they amended the sizing from the NY Vs Tokyo Cuts which were very tricky to navigate. Is the shirt too big in the body or collar? Hopefully you can exchange for a better fit, they seem to be attentive to customers issues when there’s a problem

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

I know what you mean about Kamakura...I do like their ivy shirt, but it's only just long enough for me in the body and yet the sleeves on some I have tend to be on the long size (even post-wash shrinkage), which with a bit of tumble dryer tricky I've been able to sort out

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

I bought from AB’s whose returns policy is thankfully straight forward.

The main issue was the collar size was akin to a 17??  collar and yet the body is more like a 16??  or medium.

As I mentioned I really want to love these shirts but they’re not really made for the European male.

I have some of their older NY fit shirts and they were a better albeit not perfect fit for me.

Having now tried loads of options from cheap to expensive, from UK to USA made, from niche players like Lean Garments to global brands such as Brooks my preference is either Brooks Madison fit or Press sports shirts.

It’s a personal choice driven by lots of factors and to each his own.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

As per Tom’s comment; since Kamakura amended their sizing I find their stuff too slim cut, which is not what I look for in a shirt. It’s a real shame as they do some inspired and very tempting designs.
My shirtage take-up has fallen right off over the last couple of years as the polo (long or short sleeve) reigns supreme at FlatSix Towers. Proper shirt buys have been limited to the odd Jakes order or seemingly irresistible vintage piece.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

As a boy, I had a grey flannel popover shirt to go with grey shorts and grey long socks.

It was baggy. A popover shirt has no give like a polo shirt.

Shirt makers forgetting practicality while bringing back styles of yesteryear ?

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

The size guide on the Kamakura site suggests the popovers are alpha sized over collar sized (like the rest of the range) and are in whole increments 15", 16", 17" etc

Obviously they always need to be looser in the body to allow you to get them on, so unless you got an erroneous cut it should have been ok as the chest on an L should be 49" compared to the M which is 46"

EDIT:
Just had to go to my local Boots and there's a TK nearby, so went for a mooch. The find fairies blessed me with a white Beams+ OCBD popover for £24!

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Tom,

I based buying the large on my previous purchase - this years seersucker popover.  I tried both the large and medium seersucker shirts. The medium was theoretically closer to my actual shirts size at 15.9" and large was 16.8" collar. I had to with the large as the medium wasn't anything like a 15.5"

Therefore, to be consistent in the twill I went Large again. Same brand, same style, completly different sizing. Can't understand why they've tinkered with the size in the space of a few months.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

That’s so frustrating, especially as your seersucker worked out. Wonder if it’s worth asking Kamakura directly why the cut has changed so much. Unless of course it’s incorrectly sized but that wouldn’t account for the offset of collar to body proportions.

Are you trying another size?

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

^AB's haven't got a medium in blue.

I'm worried about the return costs if I buy from Japan.

When Kamakura first launched the Vintage Ivy collection I was caught out twice on sizing. I ended up giving the shirts away.

It was only on a trip to New York and trying on a multitude of sizes that I found a closer - albeit not perfect fit.

They subsequently dropped the New York fit.

My daughter has put down Leeds Uni as an option so I might be able to get into AB's to actually go through the different options.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

My usual pre-winter top up recently.

Magee flatcaps, Peter Christian moleskin trousers, Lands End technical fabric BD shirts for mooching around the house (very comfortable Jersey like fabric in dark blue).

Also Berwick grain apron brown shoes and Solovair Derbys (both via A Fine Pair of Shoes). Both pairs extensively reduced, lots of bargains there. I did not plan on the Solovairs but were too inexpensive to leave.

A Magee Donegal fleck sportcoat for work that is great fabric and fit for me.

Having a lot of repairs done on raincoats, sports jackets that needed it on pre-winter inspection

Waiting on JS new Ivy jackets to be loaded online, then likely done again for a while.

Peter Christian moleskin and county cords are very good.

Berwick scotch grain plain caps too. Decent price at Discount Shoes in Strutton Ground.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

I've been enjoying the glen plaid JS ivy jacket.... though, not having lining in the sleeves slightly annoying. But not enough to worry, as it's a wonderful jacket. I'm convinced very lightly structured is better than unstructured, though. I know they're having a second manufacturer who will be adding lining, but let's see....

I think the second manufacturer is Cookson and Glegg in the North West.

Hope so, as they have the skills and pedigree to ensure the quality of the product.

Recently read the book "Less" by Patrick Grant, who incidentally owns Cookson & Clegg, which he saved from closure in 2015.

He's obsessed with making quality products in this country and not outsourcing.

And Community Clothing of course. I wish I could find a product of theirs to champion. Their fit is wrong for me so far and some of the finishing poor. I had to return the raincoat on both aspects.

What else have you tried? I've been meaning to buy from them for years but only got around to it this month. I've been very pleased with the socks, and also the corduroy Harrington. Great value for the price.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Community Clothing:
I’ve bought a couple of pairs of sweatshirt bottoms for household lounging. They were on the big side and I had to size down. But the quality is fantastic and they will probably last me for ever. I would expect their sweatshirts to be the same.
Knitwear is great, I’ve had a couple of saddle shoulder lambswool crew necks and they are like M&S used to be fifty years ago, nuff said.
Socks are equally good, I’ve got a few pairs of their sports socks. Also ribbed cotton socks in white and various bright colours. The quality is as good as Japanese ones for which you would pay £25 a pair for in trendy menswear shops.
I’m currently undergoing a pink sock phase and also red socks with black loafers.
