All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

We're very quiet. Probably few if any new purchases and nothing new out to tempt us.

Also, Ivy style not really commented on in the style media it seems anymore, it's minor moment of renewed focus fading away.

Although I have no need and plenty of options, I still keep looking at the JS grey herringbone slack jacket. I'm in Baker Street next week, close to JS so will try to resist.

With the fire at Chiltern St Firehouse opposite the shop, I wondered if there was any reduced access at the time, but all will be back to normal on that aspect now.

So while still Ivy-ed up, I don't really have anything new to add. It's been cold and I've been busy and winter-ill in rotation. But it's sunnier this week and thoughts turn to Spring wear.

I hope we're all well and avoiding the winter bugs, I've had three in succession but thankfully clear (for) now.

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

Just back last night from a week of sun in Madeira, steady temps 16 - 18 degrees, shorts/polos in the daytime, oxfords & chinos ( + sweater) for the evening, probably my favourite combo if a bit obvious, whilst I was away I had a very good offer for the Boston Tailors jacket I put up on ebay a few weeks ago , despatched today, so that's some funds now for possible spring/summer purchases ,nothing in mind but I daresay something will catch my eye !

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

Well done Unseen for getting this place moving again.

I was at JS today and picked up a lovely Alan Paine long sleeve polo shirt in silk cashmere and cotton.

What took my eye was a stunning peach coloured AP short sleeve polo shirt. Yes, you read correctly Peach. It reminded me of that mid Eighties preppy look. Possibly a bit stronger than pastel

Stock wise they're still in sale mode with remnants of their Autumn collection.

Thinking back I think they nailed it with their knitwear, Paraboots, Vetra cord jackets as well as thei new buggy lined jackets.

I also visited Valesca across the street to look at the unlined OST loafers as potential Summer option. Sadly not in my size but they're on the list.

Lunch was from the recently opened Rubins cafe on Baker Street - smoked salmon, poached eggs on rye bagel. Superb.

As you leave Chiltern Street look right towards the Firehouse roof you can clearly see how damaged the building is. Really sad to see it. Although not a patron I felt it added to the vibe of the street. Hope they manage to reopen.

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

Clothes wise I haven't bought anything for some time. The other week I did see a made in England sheepskin in TKMaxx. I never could afford a sheepskin back in the day and I've always wanted one. I mentioned the coat to my missus and to my surprise she said buy it for when I'm back in Finland. I went back to the shop and the coat was still there. It was in the large section but when I tried it on it was too tight. I checked the label and it was a 36! Today in the pub I was talking to a couple who deal in second hand clothes from the 60/70s and they reckon they have a coat for me in their lock up. I might just be wearing a sheepskin next winter.

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

The seam of old LE shirts appearing on the USA site briefly has been excellent for me recently. Their formal shirt range and the few NOS items appearing have me stocked up now on. Ordering from USA didn't incur any charges and takes a week or two to arrive. Latest is a light blue with white stipes that is particularly nice (especially for the price). These shirts all have 'proper' 3-finger plus rolled collars too. In a world where I go to meetings with CEOs in sweatshirts and I'm the only person in the room in a shirt most of the time, they are absolutely fine. I've probably had about six shirts since Autumn rooting through their site. The days of me paying £150+ for a shirt seem to be passed between RL/Gant found at TK Maxx, long lasting ones pre-2017 from Viyella/Austin Reed, Jaeger etc and these.  I easily must have 50+ shirts in different fabrics, patterns etc so no point getting more at this stage.

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

I have a Baily's of Glastonbury made in England sheepskin which I bought in the early 80's. It got a lot of use back then walking the mile and a bit to my local. Although for the last 30+ years it hasn't been out of the wardrobe.
Were the winters colder back then? Possibly.
I reckon one will be ideal for Finland Robbie.

Robbie - I’ve sent you a PM about a sheepskin I’ve seen for sale - it’s not me selling it.

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

Robbie - like you I couldn't afford a sheepskin back in the day, not even close, I have on occasion thought about one in recent years but TBH I'd just need to add a flat cap and I'd turn into a Del Boy lookalike ! For those that can ' wear-them-well' they look good imo ,
AUS - ' In a world where I go to meetings with CEOs in sweatshirts and I'm the only person in the room in a shirt most of the time ' - as mentioned earlier in this post just back from Madeira, both my Wife & I commented that the average local in Funchal was much better dressed than at home, even young people seemed to wear ' proper clothes', see a few informal business meetings in bars/cafe's and the guys all seemed to be wearing suits and in many instances neckties, there were a good few ' old-school' menswear shops in Funchal,(sprinkling of Ralph, Lacoste, Gant), I didn't venture into any as there wasn't anything that caught my eye, but I looked through the door of one and all the shirts were stacked in shelves behind the counter, so if you wanted to look at anything you needed an assistant, all shops seemed to operate like this in my memory up till my first visit to the Ivy Shop in '68 where you could browse & take out  the shirts & knitwear from the shelves and admire the shoes on the central table, it's the norm now of course,

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

FlatSixC- that's roughly what I'm looking for but I might need to size up. I'm going to wait and see what my friends who deal in second hand clothes come up with. They supplied a girlfriend with an Afghan coat the other day and it looked superb on her. She got it for a bottle of wine! They buy clothes in Essex and travel to West London where they can get better prices for their gear

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

Runninggeez-The sheppie I saw in TKMaxx was made in Glastonbury. I'm not sure I would wear the coat in England because of the Del boy associations (I wear flat caps Stax!) but it would be great in Finland in a darker colour. My older cousin has promised me his sheepskin when he dies (he is 78) but his dad lived to be 99 so I might have a long wait!

Del Boy & John's Motson & Bond ruined the Sheepskin IMO, which is another reason it hasn't been aired in an age.

I was at Stansted Airport this morning and as far as I could tell I was the only person wearing a cotton BD shirt, or any shirt, for that matter. Wetherspoons Stansted at 4 am is a site to behold. I'm living the dream

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

Would like to visit Madeira and spend the week drinking various Blandys offerings. I only see Duke of Clarence in this country outside of places like Berry Brothers (too dear).

That said other places are warmer at this time of year(Canaries).

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

I wear a dark single breasted Morlands sheepskin. They were the top brand back in the day. It is not particularly warm. Technical fabrics have moved the goalposts. I like the coat though and the past it represents.

I also wear Veldtschoen footwear at this time of year. Again, there are other waterproof options but I like the style. The Roxburgh shoe does not look much to most people unless you are into the style. It is mercifully free of outside labels unlike similarly priced shoes. The boots I wear with lock laces to make life easier.

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

If we could get this website updated it’d be easier to share!

Bought a pair of boat shoes from Rancourt.  Fantastic.

Also some shirts from Press.  The NY shop was good.

Also a new pair of Alden loafers.  They had some of the old school Chipp ties.

All good stuff.

One of these days got to get up to Buffalo for some O’Connells.

Hard to get my head around pricing these days.  Everything seems so expensive.
But I continue.

Have my old early 90’s Barbour back in rotation this past season for urban and hunting wear.

Also picked up a pair of Alden tan suede chuckas or boots.  Not sure about the last.
I’ve had them for a few years.  Leather soul.  Just now accepting them.

Still love the old old Clark’s with gum sole.

Whatever happened to Leather Soul in Hawaii?  Dropped by the shop.  New owners?
Guy could care less.   The young kid who ran it used to be passionate.

Was at an Alden shop in Paris.  Off the hook with passion.  Bought a few things.

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

Horace you lucky man. Sounds like a really good trip.

What's the width of the Chipps ties?

My last trip to New York was about 4 years ago. Kamakura at the time was around the corner from Press. You could do 346, Press, Alden and Kama in a morning.

I was surprised how small the NY Press store was compared to Washington and the old New Haven store - but was full of goodies so still managed to fill my boots.

My daughter turns 18 this year and wants to go back to NY to see family so I'm hoping I can get a morning off shopping

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

AUS- Disappointing that no Ivy on display in Boston. I went there in the 1970s with my girlfriend who became my wife. I have a great photo of her wearing my Harrington in a local park. I nearly went to MIT to study for a Masters degree but played safe, saved money and  chose Imperial College. I seem to remember OCBD, a poster on here, used to post photos of himself in full Ivy clothes in Boston. I wonder if he is still there? I also wonder who now buys the clothes sold by O'Connells in Buffalo?

There are pockets of people I'm sure. I saw one nice button down shirt, asked whose it is, thinking Brooks or Press. But no, it was Charles Tyrwhitt USA!

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

I visited Boston about 16 years ago.
The big thing, clothes wise, was  the opening of the new Ralph concept store - Rugby.
I went and was unimpressed but found a stand alone Polo store that was superb. All pastels and gingham. Nautical prints on the walls and a Sinatra soundtrack.
I ended up with an unlined baby cord sack but with 2 vents in a pastel blue.
We were staying up the coast with friends of my wife at lovely coastal village called Higgins Beach.
When I picked up my hire car I got talking to a well dressed chap in patch madras. He asked if I planned to go to Freeport to visit LL Bean as it was close to Higgins.
In my ignorance I hadn’t heard of it but ended there a few days later.
I also visited Harvard. That was packed with older chaps in formal attire even though it was the height of Summer. Poplin suits, rep ties and butcher stripe shirts in bright colours.
I found the Andover shop but it was closed as it was Sunday.
My main memory was of how natural, relaxed yet elegant the clothes worn at Higgins were - khaki shorts, sun faded polo shirts and Sperry Bullfish shoes. Possibly a jazzier belt.

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

On our trip we went up to Gloucester MA and discovered a old Finnish community living in the area. The Finnish speaking American people were pleased to speak to my girlfriend in their original native tongue and welcomed us into their homes. We stayed at a beach motel and I gave my Essex UK address and the receptionist assumed I was from Essex MA!Both me and the girlfriend were dressed in an Ivy/Preppy look and fitted in with the locals.I can relate to Alveys memories.

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

We went to Boston in the late Naughties.  It was cold and snowy when we Harvard, but I did see one student wearing loafers with no socks and a Letterman sweater. This Take Ivy’like vision went someway to compensate for the general lack of Ivy on display.
I bought some Bills Khakis in The Andover Shop and was served by Charlie Davidson. Brooks Brothers was still quite traditional and staffed by old boys. There was a great vintage store called Bobby’s of Boston, but I didn’t buy anything.

RobbieB - Buffalo University is right across the road from O’Connell’s and doubtless at one time its student and staff were the mainstay of their business. I don’t suppose they get much trade from the campus today. Buffalo is a slightly out of the way place itself and O’Connell’s is well out of the centre of town. I guess at least 95% of their sales are online, but for traditional American clothing they can’t be beat, if you can afford their prices!

Re: All quiet on the Ivy front in 2025

Up until 2006 my brother in-law was living in Darien near Greenwich CT. We used to visit 2-3 times a year and would always go out and about. Anyway, one Saturday we decided to go out to Essex CT a typical New England town with the traditional clapperboard houses, and on Main St were lovely independent shops one of which was J Alden Clothiers (nothing to do with Alden shoes). Back then the shop was quite Ivy, Allen Edmonds Loafers and Brogues, BD's, Shetland Knits and the first time I ever saw Bills Khakis. The Jackets they sold were of the darted two button variety very European, but everything in there was beautifully merchandised. I looked on their website and it looks like it caters more women than men.

My aunt and uncle lived there late 70s early 80s, we went for a couple of weeks as kids, obviously I wasn't into Ivy or even knew what it was back then, but I did get a fabulous Yankees cap and Baseball jacket (can only assume these went to my cousins when I grew out of them like all my old clothes), I like to think these were still US made items, seem to have a memory of the jacket having flock print across the back and an embroidered NY on the chest.

Was also my first experience of McD's which as a kid was very exciting – parents hated it hahaha
