How worn is too worn?

Most of us like comfortable clothes. The question is, at what point does that favorite suit or jacket have to be retired?

I like to wear my things until they break down and are balding.

When the clothes start to lose their sharp look, shape, or when the clothes start to look tatty/ratty/non-natty.

lt sounds like a silly basic answer but the important point to remember is: when clothing starts not looking as good as previous wearings, the clothing should be disposed of.

The father of the late Duke of Devonshire was the absolute king of this look.
People used to say that he had his head gardener break in all his clothes until he wore them.
Why not?

I suscribe to Douglas Sutherland's belief; " Gentleman, may wear their suits until they are threadbare but they do so with considerable panache and it is evident to the most uncritical eye that they have been built by a good tailor"

Styleforum seems to be into faux-tique instead of real wear.  They all scoff at pictures of shoes that have creasing.  In my opinion, a shoe is not beautiful until it has developed some creases.  Perhaps that is why they all love whole cuts so much, they look better unworn than worn, and are the only shoes that do.
