Uselessly 'mod'? Colin MacInnes certainly ripped into them in his essay on 'Schmutter' in 'England Half English'. Yet they presumably had their fans, and I can see the use of them: for storing tickets: for the bus, or if you hadn't had your hand stamped at the door.
