An old Tucker.
From the sixties through to now it would be a Reliant Scimitar.
Fifties: Citroën DS.
Sixties: Jaguar E-Type Convertible. Is there any other worth consideration?
Seventies: Mark I Capri.
Eighties: Mark II VW Golf.
Nineties: Escort Cosworth. A great cat ruined by the knobhead brigade.
Naughties: Volvo C30 T5
There is a difference between driving and aspiring to drive.
Many Squire/Ivy customers would have been without a car.
THE classic car that catchs the slightly-better-off, suburban thing would have been a Ford Cortina 1600E.

On a related note, a question for you on motoring etiquette:
What is the acceptable way, if any, to overtake a hearse on a twisty country road?
Had one in front of me yesterday, two other cars reverently plodding along behind it.
I thought 'fuck it' - my exact mental words - dropped into third and zipped past them in a rather uncultured manner. But it did feel kind of shabby. It was under tree cover, so God probably missed it.
What I actually owned and drove:
1960's
1962 Cortina 1200
1968 Cortina 1600GT
!970's
1965 Sunbeam Alpine Mk. IV
1966 MGB GT
1970 MGB GT
1970 Capri GT
1974 Cortina GLXR
1976 Capri 1600
1978 Capri 2.0S
1980's
1981 Escort XR3
1983 Escort XR3i
1985 Golf GTI MkII
1987 Audi 80 1.8E
1990's
1989 Audi 80E
1993 BMW 316
1999 Audi A3 1.8
2000's to date
1999 Audi A3 1.8
1997 Audi 80 Cabriolet 1.8
An Audi man!
That's an impressive car career. Mine goes like Mini, Skoda, Skoda, Polo, Nissan and stopped ten years ago, but I am tempted by an A4 TDI at the moment. A classic car would be folly for 20 000 miles a year.
Karmann Ghia
Driven by, amongst others, Sonny Rollins (what's that gatefold album on Impulse called where he's stepping out of his KG and being greeted by Rudy Van Gelder on the steps of the studio?), Johnny Simons and Barbara Bel Goodfella in 'Vertigo'.

Any minute now some Top Gear type is going to come on here and give it the old "well if you want to pay 10 grand for a rust bucket that is little more than a ponced up VW Beetle and can only do 55mph top whack then more fool you". But I say LOOK AT IT. As Ozwald Boateng so memorably commented about clothes in that documentary about him on BBC4 recently "It's all about style over substance".
