I have about 25 BB OCBD's and am looking to branch out. What other shirts do you recommend to wear with chinos? Who makes them? Viyella? Orvis? Bean? which ones?
Chambray or denim shirts. Bean sells a nice lower-priced chambray, while, RRL sells a very nice high-priced chambray.
Chambray is lovely.
And how about a Tattersall for a change of pace?
Welcome to the forum, Mr. Wasp.
Best,
Jim
Broadcloth B.D. for summer.
Check the Mercer website for a variety of fabrics.
Until Mercer gets the collar buttons right, they can't be taken seriously.
I disagree-the Mercer BD collar roll is the only one that comes close to the pre-70's BB roll.
Yeah, I don't have a problem with Mercer's BDs. I like the points for variety, though.

I think Horace's point is that there is no, was no, could be no, "gold standard" collar roll.
But he will have to confirm.
The roll is different everytime. Just from tie to tie the roll changes.
The Mercer roll is fine. The Mercer shirt is fine. But it isn't anything more than that. It's just another option.
As for me, I honestly believe that, if you try, you will get a better shirt from Brooks and may others if you go vintage.
And when I say vintage I mean thinking beyond ebay.
FWIW.

I've a mid 50's BB OCBD (My earliest, if I can believe the guy I bought it from and I think that I can) and I'm warming even more to your point...
The Mercer Oxford cloth is different of course & the technical details in construction also differ, but the 'belly' of the collar (To use a word I got from Tom Wolfe regarding fat lapels) is indeed in the neighbourhood of Mr. Mercer's cut.
BB MTM by rights ought to be the best, but I hear very patchy things about them...
And all of that is just about the Brooks roll - The J. Press roll we will save for another chapter!
Always good to chat to you, Richard.
Best,
J.
