I was watching the ian drury documentary yesterday on the bbc. He meets old friend and tutor peter blake, and talks of one of peters old outfits as a grey ivy league jacket from austins. mentions lapel and vent.white tab collar shirt and paisley tie . He also talks of booking the tubby hayes quintet to play the art college ball instead of the beatles.
and being into mingus & charlie parker, dressing sharp and going to ronnie scotts . nice
I would have loved to have watched that. What a band Ian Dury and Blockheads were. Effectively mixing vaudeville and funk, probably the closest to Dury's song philosphy would be Tom Waits. But not the sound, but vision.
All those great tracks, as Dury once sang "there ain't 'alf been some clever bastards." And let's hope we do indeed have some more.
I think new boots and panties is a very good lp. A much underrated band and album from that period of uk music. interesting guy to boot. I can see what you mean with the tom waits ref.
Im sure you two fellas wont have to wait long before its repeated on bbc4.
