Re: New In At Chiltern Street...

FlatSixC - gah! Don't try to tempt me into buying more stuff! Maybe I might risk it to see if they end up on the sale. I can't afford my clothes. I'm not even sure I need anymore, for at least a decade. Especially suits and sportcoats! I regret buying the linen suit (as it's going to get such limited wear) so going to try to dodge this urge for a navy suit!

The Mingus jacket, modelled by the girl standing in the doorway at 46, in grey looks good.

Re: New In At Chiltern Street...

Did anyone see that WW2 flying jacket on their FB page, I enlarged the photo and the price tag was ( I think), £ 1950 'ish, is that a good price for a WW2 flying jacket in good condition ? Wouldn't be for me, but just interested,

On Maarkkt today there is a very good looking  jacket, NORSE PROJECTS ALFRED TWEED BLAZER £145 ,size 50,  on closer inspection it looks dart less, the 3 buttons are buttoned up but the top button looks like it wants to ' roll', single vent, half lined , ( I think),it's a similar check pattern to the Press one I got from 46 CS earlier this year otherwise I would have been in for it,

Re: New In At Chiltern Street...

Stax-I saw the flying jacket and thought the market for such an item must be shrinking. Maybe one of the 'famous rich shoppers' at JS might be interested.
I will have to check out the blazer but again the market for such an item, sadly, must be shrinking rapidly.

For anyone worried of the direction JS is moving in, or anyone of a nervous disposition, check out the latest vintage offering from JS! A tail coat! HaHa I'm assuming it's a bit of fun.

Stax - ‘ Did anyone see that WW2 flying jacket on their FB page’

Good for driving a Morgan or riding a vintage Royal Enfield on a crisp autumn day, but outside of that sort of setting - no thanks.

This morning I was in the bank in our local high street when a chap in his 70s with a teddy boy haircut saunters in sporting a copy flying jacket. The branch manager (who obviously knew  him) looks up from his desk and, quick as a flash, says ‘Hello Bill, have you parked the Spitfire outside then’?

Chiltern Street does attract some rich, spoilt tossers and I think JS is trying to get a little nibble at their credit cards.

Re: New In At Chiltern Street...

JS x FOB 5 pocket cords @ a whopping £195 ,

As an aside I had an email from Sebago, some big savings, up to 50% on boat shoes,

Re: New In At Chiltern Street...

Blimey £195 with the inclusion of a JS label. Think I will pass on those. I had a pair of Levi white tab cords in the 60s which the FOB are based on. I was still at school so I'm guessing the prices were cheaper back then.

I also got the Sebago email but I've managed to resist looking.

Yep like you Robbie I had the same, ( in khaki ), I followed up in late '69 or early '70 with a dark green pair, as I remember it the Ivy Shop did not stock the Levi's cords, they stocked Wranglers,

Price-wise I think they were around 3 quid in 1968, maybe slightly more than a pair of Levi's jeans, £3 in 1968 doesn't equate to £195 today by my reckoning,

Re: New In At Chiltern Street...

Stax- Snap with the Levi cords. Mine were a light tan (khaki?) and next pair dark green! I thought I was a cut above the boys wearing Levi jeans or Sta-Prest summer 1969. Looked down on the Wrangler wearers.
£3 (including bonus) would have been about what I earned in my Saturday job in a menswear clothes shop.

Brentford to beat West Ham tonight and get Moyes the sack!

As an aside to Stax aside J Lewis selling Sebago boat shoes at half price. Limited sizes, of course.

Re: New In At Chiltern Street...

Robbie- fortunately I’m well stocked with deck shoes, suede Sebagos bought earlier this year and a pair of paraboot loafer/deckos which are very comfortable from last year,
As an aside, just waiting for the second part of your prediction yesterday to happen, I think the Bees are a bit of a bogey team for WHU,
As a second aside - interested to know what sort of menswear shop you worked in as a lad and where it was,
I knew a guy who gave up a good engineering apprenticeship to work in the Ivy Shop around 1970, not sure if he stuck it,

Re: New In At Chiltern Street...

Stax-I worked in an old fashioned menswear shop (opposite Dagenham Heathway station) and we actually served each customer, behind a counter, as they came in the door. Lots of RaelBrook shirts etc  sold to women buying for their menfolk. A real eye opener that most men didn't buy their own clothes. Only a Saturday job but I really enjoyed it. Lots of Italian knitwear/ polo shirts as new old stock which I helped myself to. I said I earned £3 but on reflection it was £1.50 with bonus because I was offered £7 a week full time.

WHU now in big trouble and as you say Bees a bogey team, along with Brighton etc. Moyes on borrowed time.

Re: New In At Chiltern Street...

Never mind 'how to wear a beret' JS is now offering a fez for sale! Try wearing that in the local 'Spoons' Ha.
I actually did own a fez once. I bought it for a fancy dress party on a cruiser sailing up the Nile. I kid you not. The only problem was the waiters and bar staff also happened to be wearing similar head gear. I lost my fez and I don't think I'll be buying the one in JS.

Re: New In At Chiltern Street...

I've purchased the FoB cords.

I have really struggled to get some 5 pockets in Navy.

Most of the ones I liked either didn't fit well or were odd shades of navy. Too dark and they won't go with brown suede or too bright and you end up looking like Portillo.

I liked the Levis version but they rise was off.

Yes, they are expensive but I would rather spend the money and get exactly what I want than compromise.

2023 will see be buying less.

So the FOB cords are up to the mark?

That's good to know. I would pay for that!

Re: New In At Chiltern Street...

I’ve a pair of the FOB bedfords that were maybe 40 quid cheaper than the cord cords. I’ve yet to wear them as immediately after purchase I had surgery and then rapidly expanded. I can attest to the quality though, superb as you’d expect from the Japanese.
I must be going mental in my middle age but 200 quid for a top quality pair of trousers seems about the price these days. Marks & Sparks chinos are only just shy of a hundred quid these days and I put them at the shit end of the market.

More purchases for me this year I hope, rather the antithesis to some of you. Quality, quality, quality - and longevity remain my mantra however, so all things shall be weighed and considered as usual.
A happy new year to one and all!

'Too dark and they won't go with brown suede or too bright and you end up looking like Portillo.'

HaHa I nearly missed this comment. Portillo does seem to throw caution to the wind when it comes to colour. I kind of admire his nerve. I bumped into him once at Gatwick Airport and was surprised how short he was.

Stax - ‘ Portillo - I always think he must shop at the colourful/outrageous end of Cordings’

It started with colourful shirts when he was on the Andrew Neill politics show with our Diane and went from there. Most of it is now bespoke as it’s an integral part of the train journey programmes. A friend of a friend works on the production team and I’m told an allowance for bizarre clothes is part of his contract. He professes to dress normally when ‘off duty’. When he was the Sec of State for Defence he was well liked at the MoD and seemed to be in touch with the thinking of everyday people He is a grammar school boy from a relatively ordinary background, there aren’t many like that in the Cabinet now.

^Robbie

The cords are being shortened as we speak. I'll report back after a couple of wears

I think the colour is superb.
