Well, black tie season's in full swing. I've got a peaked lapel SB dinner jacket. With satin lapels, unfortunately. I need a new bowtie. The bow I have is not very good, and the finish on the sewing is poor. I've never liked it. But I don't often wear black tie, so I guess I've never bothered with it and don't think about it until I'm tying it.
But I was thinking of getting something like this:
The silk faille bow here:

rather than the satin bow here:

My question is would the faille "clash" with the smooth satin of the DJ lapel? Or no big deal?
Also the Hanauer bows come in different widths and shapes (see pull down menu for "select size")
I think the 2 1/4 would be a nice trad compromise. What do you think? Maybe the 1 3/4?
Though I could go for Carrot & Gibbs, which I think have the buttons on the back (rather than the hook).

Maybe a 2 1/4 butterfly with pointed ends for the C&G
I'd say the Faille contrasts & compliments rather than clashes. It adds a nice touch of texture too I think, but probably that is just a matter of personal taste.
Would a 1 3/4 bow be a little small with the peaked lapels? Again personal taste. 2 1/4 sounds a little better to me. It's all about balance as the great man (MG) says.
Butterfly is best in the evening I think. Well... I like it anyway. Always tie it slightly crookedly too - Shows that although you're all 'dressed up' you're still relaxed and not really making any special effort here. You dress like this all the time.
All IMVHO.

I think the safe bet is matching the lapel texture, which Ive been known to do. I think if you want to look less prepackaged and more old boy, you'd wear the faille or grosgrain one.
You will also bring all the anal nerds out who will need to point out that they should match which might provide you with some amusement.
Recently, Ive developed an appetite for the square charvet look, and it's a dashed good thing I bought a black satin one on sale years ago because the charvet bow tie prices are out of line. I wish I had gotten a grosgrain one.
Somehow the Carrot and Gibbs one looks better quality but that could just be a trick of better photography. I also like it's thicker shape, Im dead against the tight, perfect bow tie for black tie.
Ive also been meaning to call Budd and get a sized one made. Wait, was there another place that custom made sized bow ties in England? Seems I had a link.
As a necessary follow up, if one wears a midnight blue tuxedo with midnight blue facings and a black bowtie, should he wear a midnight blue cummerbund or a black one?
I think i vote for midnight blue becuse I dislike matching tie and cummerbund or vest.
My old black tie is in the now unfashionable shawl lapel style & I have a ratty old bow to go with it that is a quite narrow-ish butterfly (sounds odd I know. It has the shape of a bufferfly but the proportions of a batswing. It's vintage Hawes & Curtis.) The proportions of tie & lapel seem to be right. Not that I've ever worn it much...
