Re: Auchincloss.
I was chatting to Cooly a while ago (nice guy Cooly...)about Cheever & the conversation moved on to Auchincloss. I recommended his short stories.
The 'Miles' in Auchincloss's Heiress story is a fantastic waster - I love him & would love to go drinking with him any day of the week. He comes to a bad end. He is likened to Dionysus even. Harris, I think, imagines that he is me, and for that I love him.
Really happy that Harry is reading Auchincloss btw, there is much there to appeal to him & his world-view. I like the fact that Harry & I share so many of the same tastes. VERY ODD he did not know of Mr. A before tho' & is just discovering him now... still... Who will Harry discover next? Wharton? James? Conrad?
Speaking of he who will not speak to us (Can't think why, I may be a drop-out & a waster but my background is everything he'd love... We once had a one-armed gardener called Happy Jack... We used to bet on his prowess with the lawnmover...) - Where was I?
Oh yeah, Harry -
I'm surprised that he is taking garish, non-TNSIL, non Ivy, Southern Trad to his heart. More Trad than Brooks is/was he says. Well... he's the expert not me.
Is Trad no longer TNSIL then?
THANK GOD!
Miles.
We should all read Auchincloss's The Heiress.
I am Miles Constable.
Harris is Miss Aggie Seward.
Reading the story this way adds a lot to it.
I wonder what other stories could be improved by starring me and Harry?
Not Romeo & Julliet, I hope...
Which would be which if we did Scarlet O'Hara & Rhett Butler together?
That Harry is such a playful pup... And WHAT an imagination he has.
Just can't help it -
I'm mad about the boy.
I know it's foolish, but I'm mad about the boy...
(Serious point: Why is Harry casting me in love stories? Does that mean he...? Well, well, well. What can I say? I'm flattered. Bless him.)

Back to business.
No more playful banter...
Another night, another offer of world peace -
Come and join London & Tokyo & various bits of the U.S. ?
Paris (well, one guy in Paris... the city, that is...) is also interested in Ivy League being celebrated for what it is/was.
If you really love the old Brooks / Press look then think about all you could do for the style on the MBs.
Be big. It's not all about you. It's about the style.
I think you could make a real contribution.
Your friend,
Miles.
This is cool & I thank Harris for it.
We are now actually 'talking' - Mr Harris is answering my thread here over on AAAT.
Fair play to the man - he has joined in with the dialogue & you have to respect that.
World Peace is just around the corner folks - It's all about give & take.
Social class is a big thing for Mr. Harris & the idea of 'a way of life' - You have to respect that. His take on the Ivy style comes from that direction.
Just like me he loves that Japanese Press catalogue posted up on AAAT. The guy in the pics even swigs Jack on one page - Way ta go!
I see Mr. Harris's point about it being evocative of a way of life. It's called marketing, son. I like the style too.
What difference is there really between Mr. Harris & Miles Away or Russell Street?
We all love Ivy League clothing. We have our own takes on the style. We are all children of John & Jocobi.
I don't care what the rest of the world says - I've got time for everyone & every take on Ivy. Ivy for everyone, remember?
To my brother Harris I say: You're fine. Relax. Kick back. Ever tasted Jack? You'll like the feeling it gives you, if not the taste.
Your take on Ivy is OK, you know. You ARE entitled to your point of view.
The world you live in is big - there is room for everyone.
But you must make room for others too though...
Ivy League style is an old, old style. Pray God it outlasts us both.
Your 'Trad' invention is amusing to us old hands. We do genuinely find you cute & funny. You have spirit.
Stop your fussing, young man. Don't wory so much about your social position or your position on the MBs. Concentrate on the clothes when you are on a clothing forum. That's the point.
Find a political forum for your other views maybe?
I want you as my nephew. Lets carry on talking?
Miles Away.
Edit: Mr. Harris 'talks' to me on the Japanese J.Press catalogue pics thread. I have a copy of his kind words for anybody who can't find it. Harry's post is purely about me & him & Ivy, nothing controversial. If people want me to I could post it up here. All it does is set forward Harry's POV, which as I'm fond of saying is valid. Just like yours or mine. It's an interesting read for those who are interested. He sees RL style social class markers, I see clothes to be enjoyed.
Stay Hip.

Purely a PS -
Hats off to Harry for all the work he puts into his long posts.
I crack mine off in seconds.
Lotsa hits for this thread, eh?
Everybody's interested in the Truth about Trad!
*Why-I-Oughta*

Time for a drink & a wind down for me.
Parting shot:
Horace was accused of thinking himself an 'American Aristocrat' by a Malinda & paid the price for it.
Harris is now telling us all that Ivy is an 'Aristocratic' style over on AAAT.
Will he be Malinda's next victim.?
Let's hope not.
Peace, love, and button-downs...

Edit: Cute thought - If they Malinda my boy then he can come over here & rock the forum. Now THAT would be a team, doncha think?

This can do no harm - Here is Mr. Harris's reply to this thread. Posted only to give the guy a right to reply over here.
Thanks again to Harry for joining in with this discussion. Ordinarily he steps back from anything sensitive, so it's a mark of the man that he is engaging with this issue. TREAT HIM WITH RESPECT OVER HERE, eh?
...
Sorry couldn't get it to work. Anybody able to do a link?
The post is in 'J Press Fall Catalogue (many pics)' over on AAAT. It's No. 27.
Thanks - Miles.
One day I must have computer lessons...
