Surely (with a nod to Mr. Horace) they were called Hep flasks back in the day?
I'm only here to learn.

Love em, have em, use em.
My favorote has a refrain from Kipling engraved on it.
How many oz do we all favour?
I have a 4, an 8, and a 12. The 8oz gets most use. The size seems to suit my 'lifestyle' best.
Too small and there's not much point having a flask, too large (those REALLY big ones) and they start to look a bit silly to me.
I like the plain dark brown leather bound stainless steel ones best. Especially after they've been knocked around a bit.
Liberty's in London used to do these very nicely. Not at all expensive but very good quality.
Not me.
4 oz filled with Sloe Gin or The King's Ginger suits Mrs Away.
I'd like a 6 or a 7 oz I think.
I used to put scotch in there, now I find myself taking vodka, it bruises less easily. and it looks like H20.
Vodka or Calvados these days.
Scotch or Brandy when a lad.
Perhaps not entirely appropriate for a flask but from Byron:
And for the future (but I write this reeling,
Having got drunk exceedingly to-day,
So that I seem to stand upon the ceiling)
I say - the future is a serious matter
And so - for God's sake - hock and soda water!
And a thread of random drink related quotes is born!
"Here's to us,
There's none like us,
Once there were more,
But now they're al deeeed (all dead)"
I once got drunk in Edinburgh and was toasted in the above manner.
I didn't mind.

You may talk o' gin or Beer
When your quartered safe out 'ere
Or when your sent to penny fights in aldershot
But when it comes to slaughter
You'll do your work on water
and youll lick the blooming boots
o 'im whos got it.
Kipling (from memory).
Anyone ever try this stuff: HM's Rum. I like the flagon myself:
http://www.pussers.com/rum/products
Not a Rum man, but my mate Johnny the A., swears by Pussers.
You get Pussers & porridge round his place for brunch & John Lee Hooker on the Hi-Fi.
Nothing wrong with that.

I will be using one of mine tonight. Filling it with vodka.
Not a flask man myself but am seriously contemplating a purchase. Last week at the San Diego Chargers/St. Louis Rams football game I noticed a very happy fellow sipping from his cell phone, so I leaned over and said how much I admired his 'ring tones.' He offered me a hit. Wild Turkey 101. Holy smokes! One sip of that stuff and you don't need more than a few ounces to get you through a football game or a world war.
Also, it's economical when you consider a gin&tonic at the stadium is now an outrageous $10, domestic beer $8, a glass (not even a pint) of Guinness $9.50.
Stadium security is hip to the flask binoculars but not to the cell phone flask, so let's keep this among ourselves.
Cheers, RT
Hello Miles,
to fight this seasons depression, I bought a morning flask. Can you recommend which cavalados, to put inside?. Here I have found Busnel vsop, is v.s.o.p something like w.a.s.p??
Vaclav, VSOP stands for Very Superior Old Pale and designates a relatively young brandy. For cognacs, I believe the age is about 6-8 years, but because cognacs are blended, the average age often ends up being 10-12 years. I am not so sure about calvados.
This is a thread about hip flasks and I have not posted on it yet? I am the poorer for this.
I am planning to get a sterling flask and have my initials engraved on the cartouche. I now have a stainless flask that sees a lot of use, as I regularly spike my esspresso on weekends or have a pleasant tipple after a surf session.
My favorite drinking quote, courtesy of Ogden Nash:
Candy
Is dandy
But liquor
Is quicker.
