A question from Mr Wasp regarding the wearing of a harrington jacket.

Hello,

I am a W.A.S.P from New England. I am curious as to what connotations the Baracuta G-9 has amongst your species (The British). Who wears them? Is it a cliche? Does it depend how you wear it?

What about the grenfell harrington? something like this

It's the All-English jacket that's perceived as being All-American. A bit like the way that the Button-down collar is now seen as an 'American' style, despite its history.

Various people have worn the G9 in various ways. The same jacket can be 'subcultural' or an 'old man' look. Fashionable or old hat.

That Grenfell 'Harrington' (A UK term nodding to the US in origin) is a fine looking jacket. Expensive for what it is though?

How is the G9 viewed in your part of the world? As a golf jacket?

Best -

Yes, an old man's golf jacket in the U.S

Do you see this jacket on public school types in the UK?

Re: A question from Mr Wasp regarding the wearing of a harrington jacket.

From what I know, not at all.

Public school types these days tend to wear gillet (?) body warmers, pyjama bottoms and hoodies - indeed, there is a real lack of style. I would hazard a guess that these items are similar to the US equivalents, due to the far-eastern made US brands (a la hollister, Abercrombie etc)?

I've always grown up with the link to more working-class mods and skinheads (not racist skinheads by the way), but I imagine John Simons' influence would have hugely contributed to this!

I must say though, as an undergraduate now, I've never seen anyone wear it here in the U. S. Although I have seen the Polo Bi-Swing Windbreaker on some conservative chaps.

I'm not sure we use the term gilet here in the U.S. I suppose that is the same thing as a vest? Like a down or fleece vest?

Re: A question from Mr Wasp regarding the wearing of a harrington jacket.

hollister, abercrombie, american eagle, are worn by the majority of state school types here in the u.s actually. It's a real taboo at prep schools.

Regarding the hoodies and paja bottoms, that's quite awful . . . I always thought they tended towards a spread collar, chinos, loafers, and a lambswool v-neck.

I'm not sure if gilet is the proper term - they're awful items of clothing, so never cared to find out! The popped collar polo and and jogging bottoms/pyjamas is the classic look for public school uni kids these days (almost exclusively!) - I can't get my head round why people wear pyjamas outside, literally makes no sense! - maybe people thought that about weejuns and socklessness?

Re: Mr. Wasp's post

That's not actually true. It's regional. In some places there is very little difference in what prep school kids wear as opposed to others. It's been my experience they just switch one inferior brand for another. I would also love to know what the difference between a state school type and private school type is at the undergraduate level. Unless you are talking about a small liberal arts college, there is almost no difference between the folks at say the University of pick a state and Princeton.  Test scores would be about the only thing. You probably couldn't find a less uh "trad" place than an Ivy League campus today. Plenty of people wear the Baracuta or it's copies in the United States.  There are skins or ska kids that wear them in nearly every city I've ever been in. There has also been a bit of a marketing push to include it in the neo-prep canon. Jcrew had a collaboration with Baracuta this past year. It's been featured in GQ, Details etc. I have no clue if it's caught on among fashionable types. I started wearing them for a specific reason when I was younger and now continue to do so because they go well with the Ivy gear. I also see plenty of old timers wearing  them or Mcgregor's. In my view they are many things, and are certainly included in Ivy. Hell, I think even the trads like them to some degree. Though I believe it holds the same appeal for them that Barbour does.

Oh dear, Scarlet, by state-school I was referring to pre/middle/and high schools not universities. I just didn't want to confuse the Brits with the whole public/private difference.

Okay. I wasn't offended, I went to prep school as well. I think most of the English here know that our Private school is their Public school.  I was just trying to clarify that it all depends on where you are at in regards to our side of the Atlantic.

Yes I completely agree. Schools like UGA, SMU, UVA, SWANEE, OLE MISS, BAMA, AUBURN are pretty uniform in appearance no matter if you went to prep school or not. Although with a keen eye, you could have more than a 50% chance in discerning.

Re: A question from Mr Wasp regarding the wearing of a harrington jacket.

- Important to just repeat that Ivy or Americana has no Upper Class connections in England. Our Upper Class already had their own style. The one that Ivy badly copied!

- Also it has no connection with being well or expensively educated (often very different things over here!). Again our guys already had their own style.
