Correct, its shite. One of my ex-girlfriend's use to be big into Debenhams or Browns as it was still called in Chester, she was constantly buying me sweatshirts, truly awful stuff by the native american designer who was big in there. She thought it was top quality, not long after, I left her.
When RL introduced Chaps, the game was up, I remember one of my uncles turning up and telling me he was wearing some RL chinos he had bought from the equivalent of ASDA, it may well have been ASDA. Which reminds me of this posting on the 80's video thread:

Consume suckers, consume....
^Ted Baker was very good for a about 18 months during sometime 1987-1989, then they sold out too.
Hello?
Yes, is that Ede?
Yes, how may I help you.
I'd like to inquire about your bespoke pricing. I'm visiting from the states and have as much as $700 U.S. dollars to spend, may I schedule an appointment to drop round and peruse some of your fabric books? I've been told by some friends on the fora that you can accomodate? Tally ho?

It displays a type of earnestness and belief in the power of clothes/self help books that Americans do so well.
A little disturbing that Michael Alden of the LL is drumming up business at AskAndy or is this water finding its own level?
