Re: Icy Ivy?

BEing Italian, and thus easily get cold, I have been raised to wear warm clothes in winter (and plenty of them), always with a thick scarf, hat, gloves, etc ... I often travel to the UK and also see alot of US tourists around in winter and must say I never fail to notice how little you all dress when temps are low! I knwo that indoors temps are alot warmer in your neck of the woods (all of northern europe really) so you dress in layers, but the amount of people walking around with just a plain jumper, or even short sleeve shirts, sometimes ladies in skimpy dresses etc ... BRRRR ... I am not speaking of quality (style) but quantity. The italians are of course the opposite and are too heavily dressed even when the temps are not that extreme (often when its quite mild).

The amount of short sleeve shirts I sell in winter is beyond me (you'd be carzy to offer short sleeve shirts in winter back in italy).

Having said that, I think when you have the head, feet and hands well covered, thats the first step in the right direction of keeping warm.

At the moment I'm freezing as the heaters at work are not doing a greta job

A hat that covers your ears, and a coat that covers your knees. Sheepskin gloves are cosiest.

Re: Icy Ivy?

Merino shirts are a good base. I wear my Sir Pendleton button down a lot these days, it's a thin but dense worsted merino wool.
Although it was freezing yesterday, I went to the local without an overcoat. Beefy T, Sir Pendleton, shetland crew, herringbone jacket, a muffler and a hat.

Re: Icy Ivy?

Temps never rose above freezing last week on the Oregon Trail, including a low of 8F on a couple of mornings.

My kit:
~ flannel lined chinos from LL
~ turtlenecks
~ Viyella shirts
~ Aran sweaters
~ 3/4 length coat, navy flannel
~ trusty LL chukkas
~ thick wool socks
~ gloves
~ scarf
~ knit cap

I don't really like the current LL Bean flannel lined chinos. The flannel is too light, and the legs are a bit too wide, allowing a cold draft.

The Rain Festival has resumed. I scored a pair of brushed chinos from Brooks' clearance last year. They are seriously heavy, warm, and tapered as well. I prefer these.

Re: Icy Ivy?

wow wasnt aware of the existance of wool shirts 1966 - very interesting although surely not for me.

Another good way for keeping warm is cashmere coats and jumpers. Oh, and a flask of grappa now and again

Re: Icy Ivy?

Pendleton's wool shirts were imported into London in 1949, if not earlier, by David's, Charing Cross Road.

Ours is an old game...

Re: Icy Ivy?

ah of course, the flannel shirt - sorry of course I was aware of that (IN italy they are more associated with mountaineering, hikeing and the likes) just was thinking more of a combed, formal wool for some reason, not the classic Pendleton  - apologies for my brief blackout

yes, very nice colour combo with the jumper and the shirt, very nice. I'm peeping down and like the overall look of denim, whiskey shoes (look like boots form up here) and the green jumper and madras check shirt.

Re: Icy Ivy?

Many years ago I had a wool BD shirt, can't remember the make though! But it was not a hiking/outdoor wear type shirt but literally a BD in wool and not cotton. It was yellow if I recall right......anyway I can't wear wool shirts for the life of me unless i have a longsleeve t shirt underneath.

Merino is surprising warm in knitwear too; I feel the cold fast and often use it as a second layer.

Sunday was real brass-monkey weather here, around -10°c and windy, we were out felling our Christmas tree.
Extra-slim fit H&M cords under a pair of jeans that are now a bit too big, that did the trick. Or maybe it was that big mug of mulled wine with a shot of rum.

Today:
9 hole army boots, liberally dubbinned against snow and salt
shit-brown cord jeans, a little too big - hem turned up about 1 1/2"
lovely old pastelly half-sleeve madras BD from The Thin Repp
wine-red, saddle shouldered shetland sweater from a recent foray into TK Maxx
warm waterproof jacket in dull green, pure dog-walking kit. People keep asking me if I've caught anything yet.
insulated beige cord baseball cap with fold-down earpieces
