Fogeys !!!!

I see the long overdue Fogey revival is picking up steam over on another forum...
And very pleased to see it I am too. These things go in cycles...
I shall bump an earlier Fogey thread here on FNB to bring the wisdom therein to their attention.
I like Sir Royston very much... and DougNZ too.

T.L.

Edit: The other Fogey thread on FNB is "Whit Stillman's UHB. For Fogeys/Fogies". Or somesuch.

Won't do it.
If you want Fogey then you gotta post.
PM-ing is far too shy to be Fogey.

PS - Fogey books have a distinct mummy smell.

Rather like a Fogey himself.

Re: Fogeys !!!!

I think it's called 'Foxing' in the book trade. Those brown speckles at the edges of the pages and that wonderful, old, slightly musty, library smell that you get. Very Fogey... Goes well with Stilton, Proparts leather polish and the coat tails of an old Harris tweed that's been worn on horseback in the list of top ten Fogey smells.
You're right as always Lord H., there could easily be a nice little book on the 'Fogey' style. But I'm happy to share the information for free.

Re: Fogeys !!!!

Can it be true?

AAAC are really going to have a 'Fogey' forum?

... So that's a forum based on the writings of one troll (Me) trolling another troll (Harris)!

Fantastic!

And ... well, .... just perfect internet nonsense.

DougNZ will make a very good job of it, in all seriousness, as he does actually love the style. What's more I think he just loves it for what it is - No points to prove at all. Good luck to him.

I shall watch & read & enjoy, but I shall leave it all to those who love the style to enjoy exploring it.
The Bristol eye 'Doctor' Allen turning all Fogey will be nice to watch. Bless the lad, is there a club he doesn't want to join?

Tonight I love all mankind!

Re: Fogeys !!!!

The concept of a Fogey Internet Forum is too good to be true. Coming next: online classes teaching about Ludditism!

Re: Fogeys !!!!

Now that we have Trads & Fogeys (And Mods & Rockers, And Punks & Skins, etc) on the MBs it occurs to me that there is no reason why we shouldn't have even more of these entertaining sub groups.

I therefore propose that all John Lobb enthusiasts should band together & call themseves 'Lobbsters'. They can then discuss the whole Lobbster way of life, hobbies & hairstyles included.
Is there a special Lobbster way of walking for instance? Do they have a special handshake? Where do they live?

You watch & wait, we'll have a Lobbster forum before Easter.

Re: Fogeys !!!!

I won't rule it out, but anything I post will be on FNB.

I do appreciate the PMs I get, I just think that if people asked me questions on the forum, instead of on the PM service, then the answers could add to the sum total of knowledge on the net & not just satisfy one person's solitary curiosity. It would all add to the mix out there in cyberspace a little more.

Re: Fogeys !!!!

Here's a nice Fogey story about the late Lord Longford's father:

He was sitting at breakfast one day looking at the rain outside and at the barometer inside which predicted a fine sunny day when it all proved too much for him so he seized the barometer off the wall and threw it through the window shouting 'Oh see for yourself you bloody thing'.

Very Fogey.

Re: Fogeys !!!!

Fogey swearing:

Fogeys swear a great deal all day long but they only ever say -

Damn (or Damnation),
Blast,
Bloody ,
or Bugger.

In the re-invention of Fogey for the MBs let's please remember that Fogeys are not Boy Scouts. They are people with strong opinions.

Re: Fogeys !!!!

A Fogey Lunch:

No Gentleman ever eats soup for lunch. Ever. Even eating sandwiches is a little... unsound.

Try this:

6 Quails eggs served as 'Mollets' on a bed of wilted spinach. Good brown bread & butter. A nice Chablis.

Luncheon is at 1pm. Tea is at 4. Dinner is at 8. Supper is at 10.30... Breakfast is around 7.30 to 8 am. Elevenses are at 11.

An overly thin fogey is an ill Fogey.

Re: Fogeys !!!!

I love Ludlow.
THE place to go when hungry, providing you book a table well in advance...

The late Chester Twemlow's tobacconists shop in Macclesfield, Cheshire, was a wonderful little bit of Black and White work too. Dark wood within and wonderful meerschaum pipes from the Isle of Man amongst many other items.

I once fell in his widow's pond you know...

Pevsner says that the black and white look is an unsophisticated taste. I don't know. It matches all the Fresian cows in Cheshire & Shropshire very well.
