Re: Fogeys !!!!

Chelsea was most unhappy when they linked it to Kensington.
Kensington may be a 'Royal Borough', but it is a lot more besides...
Tatty place.

Re: Fogeys !!!!

I think underneath it all I have an certain affection for the real Fogeys too... and the real Trads come to that...
You're right though, it's when these looks get so heavily codified that they become easy targets for micky-taking. The cult of the 'Gentleman' is my favourite - such a vague notion but everyone wants to pin it down to a strict definition... Well, I suppose it keeps people out of mischief. Who knows what harm they'd cause if they weren't kept busy on the internet? Poland doesn't need invading again.

Most Fogey way to clean your pipe: With a Pigeon's feather. Commercial pipe-cleaners are viewed with suspicion as some sort of new-fangled gimmick. Having fitted carpet in the Bathroom is also viewed as madness, 'It'll rot in no time!' etc.

Re: Fogeys !!!!

The old 'Internet Personas' game again, eh?
I guess we all do it to a certain extent...
For instance, I only pretend to be a work-shy alchoholic...
*Cue hollow laughter* ...

Most Fogey Preserve: Frank Cooper's thick cut Oxford Marmalade.
Most Fogey Shoelace: The thin round stringy kind, not the flat woven ones.
Most Fogey Shop on Jermyn Street: Bates, the hatters (Hope it's still there). Paxton & Whitfield comes second.
Most Fogey Shirt Collar Style: Slightly rumpled and worn through to the lining in places. Left point curling down, right point curling up. Collar stays are left on dressing table at home.

Re: Fogeys !!!!

Oi, Tel:

Most fogey cheese and why:

This is one of my favorites (descriptions taken from igourmet and Taste of Scotland websites):

Mull of Kintyre - Mature Scottish Cheddar Truckle

Situated on the West Coast of Scotland, the Mull of Kintyre     has a mild climate which is ideal for dairy farming. Produced from the fresh milk of local dairy herds, this fine cheese is carefully matured for a minimum of nine months. The cheese has been dipped in traditional wax to retain both freshness and flavor .... this cheddar exudes a honey sweetness. Mull of Kintyre Cheddar is a truly fantastic, full, rich, matured cheese.

'Mull of Kintyre', from the Campbeltown Creamery, is a mature cheddar with a nutty aroma and rounded taste.

Re: Fogeys !!!!

I think all Fogeys should read FNB's essay on the Tree of Style.  He makes some good points on the dangers of this style as being caricature.  I admire some of the Fogey style, however.
