that was an early to mid war style, to the best of my knowledge. phased out by the end. not often seen, and doubt that alot of them made it back. theres a picture of US troops arriving in england early in the war with them, in a book i had as a kid, i think. and a drawing representing 1943 . the civilian US version is the Filson Mackinaw Cruiser, dating from the wild west days and, as far as i know, still sold. if they were phased out, perhaps they were pawned off on the free french forces, like so much other obsolete equipment? (though the us versions, civ. and GI, didnt have the sheepskin collar).
yes. GI versions were 1938, 42, and 43. 43 item was "limited issue due to development of superior M-1943 filed jacket, and was dropped when supplies were exhausted". according to a site called "olivedrab.com".
Certainly the US Army dumped old kit in Paris as it was cheaper than taking it home.
i can actually recall another drawing in my childhood book after a photograph-a free french motorcycle gendarme, either in north africa or the liberation of paris, wearing one. the book was british, by an andrew mollo. excellent history of WWII uniforms.
A little bump to raise the profile of the Canadienne!
