DB Blazers--Costumey or Not?

I have been flirting with the idea of ordering a dark navy double-breasted blazer--in all probability with Holland & Sherry enameled buttons--when my friends from Kowloon come around next month.

I know many iGents like them. Prince Charles wears them (or wore them when he was younger), as do quite a few other European royals and aristocrats. Still, I can quite shaking that these garments are a bit on the flashy and costume-ish side--"Commodore Phony," and all that.

Any opinions on this? And if I do go for the DB blazer, any opinions on 6x2 vs. 4x2 or other types of button placement? The more flamboyant side of me might enjoy an 8x4, but I know the Old Philistine would hate it.

Re: DB Blazers--Costumey or Not?

I found a Burberry at the thrift store - twin vent, 6 x 2. I don't like the buttons with the Burberry logo, but it fits pretty well and the two times I trotted it out reaction was favorable.

As long as you skip the yachting cap and stay away from anyone who looks like Mrs. Howell (on "Gilligan's Island") I think the DB blazer is just fine.

If I was having one made I would go with the 4 x 2, frankly, and dull pewter buttons.

Re: DB Blazers--Costumey or Not?

No-one wears them in Australia and l never see them in shops. People will wear navy sportscoats (old man look) but never blazers unless they are shipping captains with diamonds shopping at Miss Louise for their much younger wives. Might be different in U.S.A.

l'd like to get a navy single breasted blazer done, but i'd need to be confident to wear it. l'm not sure it would be a good idea.

^ Mostly agreed, Tony, but the biggest problem with the big gold buttons is the inevitable ersatz crest. I find that annoying.

Blazers seem to be on that (very) short list of gear around which virtually everyone has immense phsychological baggage. Blazers seem so ordinary, tame, nondescript, and rather lame to me, although or course I wear them regularly.

Classic look if done well. Car salesman if done badly. One of the garments where cloth really makes a difference. Buttons good in pewter I feel. Enamel also good but can be slightly restricting.

^Totally true - buttons in pewter. Makes all the difference, and gold? Ho, ho.

A DB blazer is a look I wouldn't dare contemplate, lacking totally in balls and gall to pull it off. If I turned up to work in that, they would just laugh.

I only wear DB blazers; I like the extra buttons. I believe the original blazers were DB. Mine are bespoke from Chipp and Field Tailors.

Re: DB Blazers--Costumey or Not?

I am considering ordering a DB blazer at the moment. The key is getting the waist, buttons (no crests) and the peak lapels right. The cloth should be serge or barathea in a dark navy.

are great for buttons, including plain ones. I can never understand the hang-ups over this item - is it redolent of Leslie Phillips in a big cravat drawling "Well, Hello" to a busty blonde in a Carry On film, or something? Anyway, so what?

Not costume - just normal kit. Double breasted or single it makes no difference. Gold or silver buttons are OK too.

I do play golf though...
