Another Chris_H influence on me!
Hmmm...
...comparing Miles Davis to Elvis Presley is like comparing Hemingway stories to Marvel comics...

Well, HBH, Burroughs has compared Hemmingway to stylised pulp fiction, and I agree. But he's still very good.
I compared Miles to Elvis with reference to that episode of Father Ted only. Elvis also was a genius, and like Miles was not a composer of songs. And Elvis was also well versed in the blues and gospel.
Slim, I agree somewhat with your position on Coltrane, but he did not leave the blues, it was always there. And to be honest, its only in the last 2-4 weeks I've been turned onto the latter stages of the Impulse records phase, so, a month ago, I would be fully aligned with your position, but not now. Odd, as that music is from before I was born and you too.
IMHO the best rare soul event in Germany (maybe the world?).

Class. 'Dr Pepper' - I like it. He also recorded as 'Art Salt', y'know.
Don't forget Pepper Adams.
And 'Salt Peanuts'.
Just moved on to 'Really Hip' now -

I know he has been discussed recently. I was very much into far out stuff when I was younger but I find myself returning to this album more and more these days. Trane was known as not having that wonderful of a tone (compared to someone like Getz) but I think he could at times. Anyway:
