maybe the closest thing to achieving this "inverted snobbery" these days is to buy your gear in Japan. There are many homegrown brands that will never see any recognition outside of the country, in terms of retail presence, and many brands do "japan only" pieces. Every time I go there I see really cool shit that you can only get there. since they don't use romanized type a google search will rarely uncover any of the homegrowns. Of course you have to fit into their sizing, I have a 38 chest and I am probably the largest or next to largest size they have.
