Re: Groovin' at the I Spot -

- My, that soothes the soul on a Monday morning - Good call, Sir.

I latched onto Trane early on & he became a bit of a benchmark for me... And probably that's a blessing & a curse...

John Lally told me that Trane suffered from gingivitis. Made no difference, did it? Just like Chet with that missing tooth he was scared to replace in case it killed his vibe...

Maybe they should have both gone to Miles' Dentist Dad?

Or not.

Re: Groovin' at the I Spot -

One of the problems after Chet got his teeth kicked out and he ended up pumping gas - literally in the late '60's - was that they didn't have a cast of his teeth with the missing front one. They gave him perfect dentures, but he couldn't play, as he needed the missing tooth to replicate his sound.

It took him about 18 months to get embouchment, or whatever its called back.

Embouchure. I believe Trane had problems with his as well because of all his teeth pain.

Nina again today. Because Elaine insists.

Sad news for me today - I lose Elaine soon as she has a job with Tesco which (quite rightly) she sees as being the future for her, instead of hanging round my flat & various pubs in Clifton...

I shall miss...

... All the fun.

E. is back on Nina again and has just asked about a track called "Sea Lion Woman". It took me a while to work out that it was See-Line Woman...

I shall miss that little imp when she goes off to Tesco...

E.'s off out now down to the Post Office so I can play this at last:

Lovely stuff from '61.

Time for a cigarette...  I shall open the kichen windows and crawl out onto the balcony there & dangle my feet over the edge as if I was in Paris amongst all the pots of Basil & the Geraniums...

Next month I return to Paris after almost a year away. I intend behaving very badly.

Re: Groovin' at the I Spot -

Inbetween bouts of CBeebies and realising that wine doesn't agree with me, managed to get 'Trane's "Dakar" in and Chet Baker with Duke Jordan - "No Problem" on the Steeplechase.

Once In The Night Garden has finished, I might get some more in, before the missis decides to watch some Russkie or Dutch television.

^That photo is from the Hermosa Beach club, The Lighthouse. I think that's Howard Rumsey next to Miles. About 1952.

If I ever get the chance to time travel, that will be the next stop after I've checked out Storyville circa 1900:

And that photo also reminds me not to purchase any of Buzz Rickson's Hawaiian shirts. What must of Miles have thought of the two little whipper snappers?

Re: Groovin' at the I Spot -

Just bought the last in the trilogy of Prestige Saint JC box sets - Side Steps.  Some relaxingly swinging hard bop tracks and joy filled blues, some great stuff with Red Garland and ultra rare tuba grooves with Ray Draper.

There's good modern interview with the founder of Prestige, Bob Weinstock, on Miles and 'Trane "I just told them that Miles was not what he appeared - he was more what he wanted people to think he was. Miles was a very intelligent, sensitive type person. But he hid his personality, with all his acting.  But Trane didn't hide it, he just grew. It's almost like the Nat King Cole record of 'Nature Boy' - 'there was a boy-a strange enchanted boy....'"

Following on The Larkins link from the crepe thread :-

Not a band I followed but this was a really great song - particularly on a jukebox when you are not watching them. That said, Paul Rodgers is wearing a button down shirt rather than a tie dye T shirt.
