Interesting for a lot of reasons. Though this post-dates the ol' RL beginnings, he's much more blunt in his stated aim. Also, the bit at the end is interesting. I think he's got his eye much more on "trad" than Ivy with the statement that those other than WASPS are wearing the clothes. I see the point, but wonder if I wouldn't nit-pick a bit.
Well I think whatever side of the RL fence one is on, he has always championed classic americana to varying degrees of success and authenticity.
What I thought was interesting about this 1977 piece was that the guy was simply using it a as a seasonal fashion, much like recent seasons from all sorts of brands and designers. Just another off the shelf 'look' for the magpies.
The big problem with RL besides the sweat shops, difficulty in ironing the shirts and the lack of a roll on the collar, is that everyone wears him. Including me. One thing he does really well, and there is no equivalent on the market, is the vintage cloth oxfords, the collar is still naff, but the colour of the cloths are unique. No one else has that cloth.
He's champonied classic americana true, except he chooses not to manufacture there. Some say that Mercer shirts are cod-Ivy, well, regardless of shirt roll they're more authentic than RL.
