The last time I read Waugh, a few years ago, besides some letters I read more recently, I begun to see that beneath the social observation, the satire, the comedy, there was some horrifying.
I picked up Anthony Powell novel recently. I'd been meaning to read it for years. Still haven't gotten to it, but he was one of Waugh's contemporaries. Do you know him?

I was at a work clothes store today and bought a 45% wool blazer which fits me better than anything else I've ever bought.
I talked to the co-partner for a while. He said they used to be a dry good store, but when the old people who owned the store retired he and the son took over and changed to workwear. However, the basement is full of old clothing, cloth, and all manner of stuff. He said they sold a bunch of boxes of vintage NOS clothing to some woman, but the basement is still full. He said they also had a large supply of old plastic or rubber nurse's uniforms from the day when they wore waterproof outfits (60s?). He said a guy running a speciality clothing store in New York bought all the nurse's outfits. They asked him what sort of store he had, but he refused to say more than it was "a speciality clothing store". The mind boggles.
Night was setting in,one of the cold wet spring nights of the north;and it was discovered,soon after they left the ship,that in their haste they had forgotten to provide him with a boat coat.
He,however, forbade them to return for one; and and when one of his companions offered his own great-coat and urged him to make use of it; he replied." I thank you very much;but,to tell you the truth, my anxiety keeps me sufficiently warm at present."

Quite right about the black facings on a dress coat but I'm not so sure that they are de rigueur with a DJ-Tux are they? I do like these old expressions from RS: the Bookie's Runner I already knew but not the Pox Doctor's Clerk and that has amused me considerably. I am even permitting myself to smile and my toes are moving, indicating that I shall shortly be consumed by uncontainable mirth. Maybe this is because it always strikes me all these fellows always on about 'clothes-matching' should really go into curtain design or floristry. The thing is, by the time that they have got dressed, the day, for actually living, is over.

Is a dinner jacket in it's FORMAL definition not a FORMula and near uniform?
Possessing one again is high on my list but low on my priorities. I'm still trying to forget the shawl vs peaked and even notched lapel egg cracking at Andy's Anonymous.
FNB - I agree with most of that but I am not sure that the British are quite as uptight as you suggest!

Who talked about nothing but Snark,
He fell on his head, said: I'm a dog, so I'll bark;
