That was a private moment. Next time you peek under the cubicle door we will splash you in the eye.

Regarding rhe oriingal quesiton, I am certian some of the key figures around here attended at least one Sartorial Flatulence event, probably in the early days before the Forum Wars began and lines were drawn in the sand. I am certian Grayson and Buffy himself both attended, in the past.

Re: Anyone here ever met with other forum members?

Interesting question; I’m not sure I want to meet the vast majority of clothing / style forum posters and certainly not to show off one’s cloths. However from my experience on other fora, the probable lack of meeting, the large number of people posting and general anonymity may account for the amount of snark on the forums , for much of the general hostility, the unchallenged crap advice and for piss-poor moderators – present company excepted.

I used to post on two fora related to flying;

One, originally set up for professional pilots, has a huge number of  people posting, some know their stuff being very professional (paid or unpaid) but the majority are either SLF’s (Self Loading freight = passengers) or players of  Microshafts flightsim who think they can therefore fly a 747 or F15 but in fact know sod all. 99.999% of poster do not know other posters and hide behind “nom de posts”. The result is worse than Andy-land and in many cases the advice given is actively dangerous as some pilots might actually believe what the aviation equivalents of the iGent say.   The press certainly do and after every aircraft accident there is always a cloud of miss-information in the papers quoting the iPilots on the forum.

The second forum is geographically local to UK and aimed at “amateur” pilots as I wsa until recently. Many of us met at regular intervals at “fly ins”, at informal “flying tables” for supper and drinks every month or so and at charity events.  Perhaps 50% of the regular posters (several 100, certainly many more than post here) either knew each or were only one step away. There was a great deal of trust between  formites and snark normally only occurred with the occasional troll (although some trolls were great fun - particularly when it was a regular in disguise) and a very small minority of wannabies / idiots who were corrected VERY quickly. Professional pilots (paid or unpaid), ATC folk and others with vast experience and in a few cases in very senior positions in the industry put in very useful comments. The result was a very “happy” and informative experience and a great contribution to flight safety with only the occasional hissy fit.

My conclusion is that knowing a significant number of other posters and preferably posting under real names makes for a much more “useful” forum…..

…….. But it ain’t gona happen any time soon on these fora………

……… And a bit of snark now and then is in any case good fun - which is the only reason I am here :-)

Re: Anyone here ever met with other forum members?

I've been on the net since the early 90's and was on Internet Relay Chat and started/owned #politics on oz server and a part op in#quiz and #coders. Was also on Usenet on many groups notably alt.religion.scientology.

The scientology group got pretty genuinely heavy at times with scientology officials invading peoples privacy, threatening people through their workplace/ employers  and the USA courts system. Thats all on public record. Most sensible ppl learnt to protect  themselves and i did meet up with a few posters at anti-scientology demos and have a drink after.

On #politics its was a mix of left wing nuts, right wing nuts Ayn Rand worshippers, normal sensible lefties and righties and a few politics professionals. A few minor pollies and even Antony Green used to pop in in the very early days. Then blogs killed all that.

Hell I even had an interstate Objectivist activist stay at my house. Talk about tolerant.

We had the odd meetup and all went well as we had a few drinks and discovered that some political enemies were better company and politer  than some political felllow travellors. Moderating the channel was always easier if you knew ppl. Everyone seemed better behaved. Or maybe you can just see the smirk and smile behind the keyboard instead of just typing without nuance and body language.

We had a few #quiz booze ups around oz and they were always good fun and many ppl had good sex afterwards and a few even got married. Other regulars went on Sale of the Century and other TV quizes.

The worst of all was a group on usenet I was on for a while- rec.aus.hi-fi

Yup - populated by amp makers, speaker designers, audio shops, retired school teachers with leather elbow pads on cardigans, and assorted mild aspbergers type through to full blown audio autistics. There was some good advice but it deteriorated into foul abuse, stalking cyber and real life, threats and violence, reporting businesses to tax office and so on and so forth - amazing. And all over things such as what a speaker sounded like, if cables make a diferrence and vinyl versus digital capacity for low frequencies. I'd rather go to a Bandidos BBQ with Hells Angels colours on than a rec.aus.hi-fi tea party. I don't think there ever was one.

Later more modern years I've had blogs group and solo - literary and politics. Meetups / booze ups used to be frequent mixing lefty righties greens, players pollsters, commentors etc etc . Always fun. Often a surprise to meet ppl behind nom de guerres.

Meetups can go well if they are organised well. Its an science/art how to do them. They can engender a spirit of tolerance and cooperation online.

One of the problems online is that it is a democratic medium and attracts socially inadequate ppl who have never worked in groups in real life to achieve something. Have never chaired a meeting. Who have never known how to compromise to achieve a deal or outcome. Who have never had to convince someone of anything -people who think most of their opinions are right and that the rightness of their position is self evident.

I suspect many online participants still live at home with their parents or in a shed in the backyard hunched over a keyboard late at night leaking the contents of not fully formed brains directly into the internets.

I'm a member of a custom knife forum, and I have met many of the members, but it's the only online community I have really interacted with "live".

No unless Michael Alden is a member here.

Contrary to lies of FNB and Woofboxer, I (and most of the other "Buff Bastards") have been banned from posting on this forum. There are only a few posters left so don't waste your time on here. This forum is dead and nobody cares.

Its quite possible, I've reinvigorated volatile whore markets across the globe.

There's a few whores of misfortunate on this website, the same as any other, I'm sure I've paid for their service, by the hour or day, depending on the geographical position.
