Re: Quality of Crepes

Goodlookin BI but those ccats told us in June that they were goin to have em ready by Labor Day then December bcuz"it takes time" then Late Jan. then anyday and we're still waiting. Mike is intimidated by these cats so he doesnt make inquiries si he waits until they're ready to talk to him which, since these cats are busy execs isnt often so like the sayin goes "a closed mouth dont get fed". Since so many companies make PBs the chance of the originals coming back are much greater my friend he reads this thread everyday he's the one I traded the Davs for the BWs he sent me some pics of PBs made by Lugz and also some McCreedy & Schreiber PBs the look kinda like the last  joints Weej copped off ebay. I still havent gotten it down yet (how to upload a pic) but Im working on it (66) so bare with me brothers...

Re: Quality of Crepes

^ Yip, spotted those as well. They're Sanders right? Because of the soles I guess we could call them Playboys.

Yeah, they are. They look like a hi-top and the sole looks like a Playboy. If I get more pics I will post them.

Re: Quality of Crepes

Worn with the right stuff they could look pretty cool. I'm sure there were different versions of the PB style  back in the day the same as there were lace up weejuns, etc.

Re: Quality of Crepes

I think i found the solution to the heel peeling while you're driving.a seat cushion i used as a floor mat work very well.tried them out on the new style of sanders playboys i bought at mikes last week. and it worked no peeling at all.

Re: Quality of Crepes

Big thanks to all on the forum for putting me on to Sanders. The leather low cut shoes are (hopefully) on their way now. I've only been waiting since 1978 for a pair of these.

As luck would have it, I came across this wonderful forum as a result of buying 2 pairs of RJ Colts (about 20 quid each including postage). And I'd agree with many posters; they're not really spot on but will do as a daily driver  or in the office. The Sanders will be for special occasions.

The striking thing about the playboys in the 70's and 80's was their total uselessness in wet weather. I can still see a crowd of Rebels at Brighton station, barely able to stand on the wet stone floor.

Thanks to you all.

Welcome on board, Matthew -

Lots of new guys just now & I couldn't be happier. Most Email or PM & have yet to post on the forum, so those who make the leap to join in the wider discussions on here always get my vote.

If we all share what we know, we'll all know more.

Best,

Big Nose.

Re: Quality of Crepes

I know the consensus on this shoe but some of us agree they are OK for everyday life ie work, play, walk in the park, one on one Basketball(like Cos earlier in the forum) walking the dog, going to the store Im sure you guys get it. What's best is the color never saw a lo-leather RJ PB or a Tan one for that matter. Still havent figured if I paste this into the image tag or do I copy the image tag Im a little confused Im sure my man 66 will fix it(hey that kinda rhymed:) smile smile

Re: Quality of Crepes

Some memories.

In the late 70's and early 80's we bought black boots from an old style family shoe shop with yellow cellophane in the windows. I can't really remember the brand but I'd guess they were either Eaton’s or maybe George Cox. The didn't have the leather piping above the crepe and split fairly easily.

The low cut version came along a little later and we'd pick them up from a shoe shop in Brighton (on Bond Street). Again these were very like the pics on here of the Eaton clubman. Alongside the playboys (a term we never used at the time)  we’d dig the blue canvas numbers that we called "comforts" - six week summer jobs - and black leather shoes with a seam round the toe and horrid synthetic soles that were called "town shoes". Both from Eastern Europe.

Then it was J Simons in London and various incarnations including a low cut brogue version in chocolate brown (which I foolishly binned on my last house move). Most of these tended to get into disrepair quite quickly with the crepe coming away from the sides and two other curious phenomena. Firstly if you didn’t wear them for a while – i.e. when it was raining – the crepe would go hard and become brittle. Then, after maybe a year, the whole shoe would let out an almost audible sigh and subside into a squashed Cornish pasty shape. That’s when it was time to bite the bullet and buy a replacement pair, sometimes from places like Robot – who I think stocked a George Cox versions.

Latterly, John Simons started stocking his own brand version, which were much better, having the piping round the top of the crepe which prevented (to some extent) the gaping effect. Brown tan boots (which I died black quite successfully) and Black suede low and high cut versions. My last pairs of each of these are still going strong after maybe five years but are just starting to get the “last Ginsters in the Petrol station” look to them.

Just before he closed, John stocked the Sanders version but I never got the size I needed and they didn’t have the black leather low cuts that I have treasured since seeing a pair on a Rebel from Hastings in the late 70’s who claimed to have stolen them from an Italian tourist who’d left them behind while swimming off Eastbourne sea front. Now, thanks to all of you, I am sitting and waiting for the roar of the Post Office van.

All we aim to do here is to change lives...  wink

The Rebel / Ivy Americana interface is interesting - We should dig deeper into that theme I think.

It's heartwarming to know that some things never change. An acquaintance of mine was the patsy in a Czech monkey boot scam only a few years back.

Re: Quality of Crepes

fred; he has them in black and burgundy. the burgundy ones are beautiful fred they were turning heads you would love them, those two colors are in leather and get the speed shine with them 2.00.  and yes fred i took the same size in both of them that is  in the rounded toe and the streamline toe. fred call him 212 921 8218 and fred get the details.if they have your size get them, because you never know if you would ever see these good looking playboys again.

I did receive them - I have to admit I am pretty disappointed.  I expected more given the price I paid but they are really $40 shoes not $130 ones as you said.......oh well...
