I really liked their old shop.

I don't know what their stuff's like now, but they had a great place.

Hilditch & Key altered their large store to bring in Bates. It looks very good (easier to view merchandise which is unchanged) and Binks is in prominent position. There is a good window display. I am confident that business will increase as that is the better end of Jermyn Street.

Bates is much cheaper than James Lock which has raised its prices by 5 to 10% this year. Lock charges £95 for this cotton hat - http://www.lockhatters.co.uk/Cotton__Lightweight___UPF__Hats-Monaco-P118.aspx. I bought the same hat in Bates for £50 last summer. Lock charges £75 for a Tilly hat (http://www.lockhatters.co.uk/Cotton__Lightweight___UPF__Hats-Tilley_Air_Flow-P252.aspx) whilst other stores charge £50.

^ Awful looking hats too. Like something a cricketer would wear.

Re: Bates Hats Moves In With Hilditch & Key, Jermyn Street, London

What amazes me is that these guys are an example of how A/A has moved away from the British heritage - sadly - even in the sartorial stakes. A/a is more European and American now and the old WASP era is dying, Funnily enough in Italy and the USA this style is stil de mode - what the AAAC call trad. The saddest thing is that the sartorial style in those days demanded quality - be it Goodyear Aussie made Florsheims or whatever...no compromise on quality.

I have bought a few NOS pairs of shoes by Hansman a post War shoemaker - now defunct - like Raoul Merton. Amazing quality and also stylistically a bit different from O/S...not carbon copies.
