A gentleman's game played by hooligans I'm afraid.
I think the players are fine, its the few hooligan fans that make a mockery of the game and spoil it for others... not that im a footy fan!
Denise
Over the past week, against all reason and good judgment, I have had a few online exchanges with English "Girls Ball games" fans regarding the game itself, the World Cup, the upcoming match between the U.S. and England, and sundry other matters relating to "THE MOST POPULAR SPORT IN THE WORLD." As a consequence of this experience, I can say with some confidence that English Girls Ball games fans rate among the biggest assholes in the world. They make Yankee, Red Sox, and Cowboy fans look like eloquent and urbane sporting enthusiasts.
That Burberry stuff is amazing - and not a pisstake.
One of my brothers lives in Scotland and visiting him last year I was amazed at the number of drunken, stoned, skinny, pale, swearing, aggressive, violent, vomiting chavs (or NEDS as there are called in scotland) all wearing burberry, caps, scarves, jackets, bags, and tracksuit pants allover the streets. The 15 year old mothers were even were pushing their numerous sprogs around in burberry checked prams.
Just as funny was the (relatively) civilized denizens (which I naturally fell in with) bemoaning the fact that their expensive Burberry signs, signals and signifiers, were being allocated confused and lesser meanings by a, rightly, confused onlooking populace.
Geez - even I was confused - was my university attending nephew signaling a sly knowing transgressive irony with his burberry scarf or was he signaling a straight attempt at bourgeois respectability and his eventual professional employment or was he, as he claimed, "just wearing it 'cos it was warm and hanging behind the door"

Rugby players eat their dead. I actually enjoy 'world' football because I was raised in it. Odd day though; It came up on another forum by a canadian simply enough. Another poster here in California mentioned an irishmen said they were all rooting for the USA. I replyed in a lighthearted manner to diffuse any uglyness. next poster went off about irish, welsh and scots being poverty stricken drunks and the USA would show up late as usual and claim victory. English poster replies hoping his insult went unoticed since football isn't popular in America. I reply, a measured counterpoint and tacked on "Up the rebels." He freaked out, deleted nearly 1000 posts and closed his account.
Meanwhile, real world friend Allistair Oliphant calls from our local transplant pub " Oye! Kavanaugh, splendid game. It's safe here, come on down for a few." I did, paid for our three rounds and told my odd story. Allistair looks around quickly, leans over and says ' sounds like a fekking orangeman' I sort of staggered home the 5 blocks on foot, avoiding SUVs with LAKER flags.

l've never unstood why blokes watch Girls Ball games. lt is one of the most boring games ever, that and basketball. Torture to watch.
World football is physical chess. What I REALLY want to someday watch are the Papua cricket championships. I saw a film about them. Dyaks can't go headhunting since WW2 so it has become highy ritualised. All of a sudden the equal of Manchester United- the airplanes come marching in mass formation, arms outstretched like wings, bent over swooping left, right,up down in feathers and paint.

Chavs might be ,bad, I agree, but obviously you have never encountered fat A,mericans sports fan with pot belly, t-shirt, and 'baseball' cap eating nachos and burghers. Fans of the Lakers are some of the worst, primitive third world peasants around.
Football is so much more exciting than US sports due to lack of constant breaks and interruptions, which in the US are required because of corporate rule (television ads). The chosenite power eliet in the US will never allow Girls Ball games (football) to gain a genuine foothold here not only because of its European origin (i.e., non-US--the power elite can't control it), but because it doesn't lend itself to corporate rule as readily.
