White Bucks?

What is the combined wisdom on white bucks? Now that we are in the middle of the summer season, the subject seems timely.

There are a few of us here that probably went through school with a pair of bucks, and a pair of Weejuns. They still seem like the natural summer thing. You don't seem many on the East Coast, where we live, and they usually elicit comments like "haven't  seen shoes like those in years."

Are they still as appropriate as the OCBD, and 3/2 blazer to those that appreciate Ivy?

I say Yes, but I never wear them. I'm a Dirty Buck kinda guy. Dirty Saddle Bucks too.

Dirty Bucks with Grey Flannels used to be a favourite of mine & one I must revive this Autumn.

Nice with chinos and blue BD shirt for a very casual-yet-spiffy summer look.

The white bucks are a nice dressier alternative to sneakers and will subtly distinguish you from the legions in brown loafers and mocs.

Let them get dirty.

Re: White Bucks?

I am very fond of my white bucks. They were very popular at my prep school--why, I'll never know. You couldn't walk 50 yards without your shoes being covered in dust most of the year. I had been craving some white bucks for some time before I bought a pair of Ralph Lauren made-in-China ivory bucks about 4 1/2 years ago and wear them with some regularity in the summer months. I do try to keep them as clean as possible, which is something of an uphill struggle. My wife just hates 'em--old philistine that she is!

White bucks seem to be enjoying a minor revival. I see them for sale more commonly than I did five or six years ago.

Re: White Bucks?

I enjoy them. However I only generally wear them with the full seersucker suit.  Though I have seen pictures of older relatives pulling them off in conjunction with white dinner jackets and what appear to be grey pants in the 1940s?

I wear dirty bucks on more occasions with a blazer.  My father enjoys these a lot as well and has also been known to wear them sockless with a madras ss shirt and khakis.

Re: White Bucks?

I have an old pair of white bucs - sebago perhaps, though not sure.  One shoe has become darker than the other, enough to annoy me.  I've not put anything on them either.   Would a chalk bag even them out?  Something else?

Re: White Bucks?

Saturday night at South Coast Plaza, I saw an off-beat pair of white bucks at the Johnston & Murphy shop that were configured as saddle oxfords instead of the customary plain toe bluchers. They looked pretty good. Moreover, they were on sale at half-price, only $65. Alas, they were sold out in my size, or I surely would have bought them.

I know contemporary J&Ms are held in low esteem among the iGents, but that price for a shoe I was only going to wear on rare occasions would have been irresistable.

My Cole Haan are currently getting an airing.  Even on cheerless days they can be worn with jeans or chinos; sockless on warm days.  They will insist, however, on staying clean and I prefer that worn-in look.

Re: White Bucks?

I agree, I would go for the white laces, though I'd keep the dark ones around for versatility's sake... I'd think about a lighter shirt as well, I like the madras tie with the stone suit but I think that dark of a shirt looks a little off with such a light, summery look... Or you could go with a darker tie instead, a navy or a darker red, and then the shirt would look fine...

Re: White Bucks?

I've had a pair for four decades, got them at Barrie Ltd., USA with red crepe soles, never did see an old-school hard-rubber sole pair yet .....

worn them a few times, at a few hot-weather summer weddings, I'll bust them out again if asked nicely ......
