I'll throw my foolish youthful view into the mix, through a potted history......
I got a Ben sherman gingham button down, and loved the look of a button down collar
I got hold of a non-iron Brooks blue button down, and I realised what a proper collar roll could look like
I got a Gitman 'vintage' uni stripe shirt, and realised what a proper shirt material could be like with proper roll of a collar.
The gitman seems like a bit of a break-through item for me, a proper material with good collar (not perfect, I don't think). Whilst it may be a hipster item/brand/style whatever, it's a shirt which meets all the things I'm after (collar, material, style etc). Whilst it may be more expensive for what it should be (an american made OCBD should hardly be a luxury item, you're right) it fits the style which I want whilst be accessible for my size and youthful take. Better than the Brooks. I say this with regret. They, out of all the loosely ivy related brands, could really do something good for themselves, but still make shit from such a brilliant past.
(Apologies if that doesnt read well, it's late!)
our dear friend has written very eloquently about mr lean who isn't so lean may i say

Funny, thinking about it, how one can become predjudiced against certain shops for stocking something... I felt rather the same way when Deb's began stocking Levis and Duffer...
Gant is a popular middle class brand, especially with the over 30s who hate the huge logos on Polo RL and other big brands. In Kingston, there are few alternatives in the department stores. This year's Gant summer collection was poor - too much pink and shocking bright blue like Tommy Hilfiger. Thankfully, the autumn Gant collection looks much better - more traditional and better quality. There are some big checked oxfords like those above.

I love vintage Gant. Something sporty and youthful about the brand - locker loops and buttons on the back of the collar and that...
^ yes, so do I adam. A vintage hugger is perfection . You cant beat a good bit of gant.
Even if a lot of what they churn out today is dross.
Yes, I simply said a lot of what they churn out is dross, b.o.b, not all!... they still pull off some good stuff, I agree. best

I have just thumbed the Fall 2010 Gant brochure - very Ivy!
This is the shirt that I spotted and commented on above - http://www.gantuk.com/shop/mens/shirts/rugger_syracuse_twill_big_check_shirt/red/?page=0. This one is not bad - http://www.gantuk.com/shop/mens/shirts/winter_nautical_maine_twill_big_check_shirt/navy/?page=0. This one is similar but not to my taste - http://www.gantuk.com/shop/mens/shirts/georgetown_newport_twill_check_shirt/marine/?page=0.

Gant is now selling an Oxford Cloth shirt that is tagged as "Selvedge Oxford". The edge of the cloth has a contrast stripe which is left visible somehwere in the inside seams. The mind boggles. Of course there are blog entries about it...
