Re: When does style become costume?

What is that Dylan Thomas quote?
Something about an alchoholic being someone who drinks just as much as you do, but whom you don't very much like?
Is the 'costume' insult in the US a little similar? (No reflection on anyone here).
Is it just a neat way to politely rip into those you don't think too much of?

Just interested ( & if it is I'm gonna use it all over everywhere given half a chance!)

Wolfe is the perfect example!

STYLE in London.

Costume (Maybe?) in NYC.

Well-dressed? Not for me, but for him I'm sure yes.

I think we have an interesting rift here...

When you take an inordinate amount of time to make it look as if your clothes adhered to your body by chance.

Re: When does style become costume?

I think people dislike costume because most people in the States wear one. When they see an example that makes it really obvious, it ruins the illusion and brings everyone back to reality. smile

Re: When does style become costume?

I havent read that thread yet but before I do at least part of what makes a style costume.

Clothing becomes costume when it distracts people and they think you are negatively odd or ridiculous unless you are attending a theme party.

And costume seems to be a dead end. For those who want to bring back the stroller or the button boots, how many examples in history have clothes ever been redeployed in the same sense; when has a fashion ever been repeated?
