Absolutely Essential Conservatism

Nothing to do with gay Tory MPs leaving their wives.  I'm just trying to work out whether, in the 21st century, Ivy style will remain largely static or whether there will be some new minor eruption of design talent.  Claudio and his successors?  I doubt if this would work for me - I'm too set in my ways - but will the younger lads who are coming through (in the UK anyway) go on buying and wearing vintage Brooks for the rest of their lives?  'Absolutely essential conservatism' applies only to myself: in terms of what I'll buy and the colours that I'll buy it in.  'Pink if on drugs', to quote Macchiato Man.  Okay, Horace?

Pink is just so yesterday.  Must have been exciting when Mark Timlin wore it.

Re: Absolutely Essential Conservatism

Seriously, Alex, it became the colour to wear in England a few years ago.  Just to prove a point at first, then it spread.  I think Russell Street is still fond of his pink Brooks OCBDs, but it's never done anything for me.  Doubtless Horace is right re Blue Note.

Re: Absolutely Essential Conservatism

I wore yellow knits when I knew no better.  I have a yellow UCOB polo I picked up for a couple of quid, which looks okay with jeans for a trip to the supermarket.  But shirts, no.  Not even a discreet stripe.  Pale green might be interesting.

If I remember rightly, Heikki worn a yellow shirt when he did his 'ivy illustrated' post in the Ivy for today thread. And it looked great.

Maybe he has the right colouring for yellow.

Love the old Brooks Pink with a white Hanes T & some Levis or chinos. Leave your socks off & wear some camp mocs.

You'll get fanny.

Re: Absolutely Essential Conservatism

went to buy a yellow OCBD once, didn't suit me at all, bought a pale green instead.

colours definitely only work on certain people. on the PJ O Rourke thread, nice though the yellow OCBD and madras shirts were, neither particularly suited his skin tone...

Re: Absolutely Essential Conservatism

This has spread from Horace's thread.  I began by simply wondering: where to next?  I know where I'm going, more or less: backwards.

Surprised that Chenners hasn't posted on this, as all dandys know, pink was a male colour until the marketing chaps hijacked it in the 20th century for the girls.

Contrary to lies of FNB and Woofboxer, I (and most of the other "Buff Bastards") have been banned from posting on this forum. There are only a few posters left so don't waste your time on here. This forum is dead and nobody cares.

Re: Absolutely Essential Conservatism

both pink and yellow do work... lime green, peach, cream/ ecru, tan can also work... it's just that they're not really conservative and therefore slightly exotic...

white and blue are essentials, though, that's the point....

you can add to the essentials, but it's not necessary...

I didn't wear pink OCBDs for about two or three years, about 2004-2006, when every bank clerk was wearing it...

What's the fun in wearing pink shirts if there's not a mob of yobs who think you're a poof?

A beige shirt slightly exotic? Well call me Mr Wacky...

I would be fine with a white OCBD every day of the week I reckon.

The more colourful oxfords are always a nice touch peeking out from under knitwear.
