I was going to bust out the sock garters this week, for the black tie event. Because my silk socks have little elastic on top. What do you think? Mayby only for formal wear? Not for bermuda shorts?
I think they're perfectly acceptable for day-to-day suit wear as well, although black-tie does seem the time to break them out if you don't wear them normally.
As an aside, one of the more interesting vintage things I've seen were 18kt gold sock garter buckles by Cartier, made in the '40s.

I guess they have certain implications -- of fogeyness and of comedy -- but they seem damn practical, esp. if you are wearing socks that are not over-the-calf. Of course, many socks today seem to have pretty good elastic, but I'm finding that my favorite sock for normal use, the Press calf length in wool, falls down every so often. The best socks I've had, which don't fall down, are dore dore. Not the case with Panth and whoever makes for Barbour. And most of my falke are athletic socks.
Now the question is where to order? Thurston? Or is there a good American firm that still makes them?
google and ebay will give you good assistance. Take a look.
PS has some hidden in a drawer under the socks, but I do not know the maker.
I like the sock garters, Sam I Am.
The Jr League shop I frequent hereabouts often has some old ones lying about. Some in wacko colors. I kind of like that.
