The Brooks Look for Spring 2007

Sneek Peek:  Brooks Bros. Goes Contemporary.  DNR.  Oct 23, 2006.

NEW YORK - In a setting that could easily rival a designer's runway presentation, Brooks Brothers shed years last week with the launch of its spring '07 collection.

The flagship's sixth floor was transformed into a series of lifestyle vignettes separated by floor-to-ceiling drapes to better highlight the store's upbeat approach to today's contemporary suits and sportswear.

"The theme of the season is neutrals," said Lou Amendola, executive vice-president of merchandising. "Medium tans or gray. And we also have a very strong navy and white statement." Fabrics are mainly natural, and include cotton, silk, linen and bamboo. The themes were evident in the offerings of preppie, V-neck cable sweaters, embroidered cotton casual slacks with tennis-racquet motifs, and graphic print sport shirts.

Claudio Del Vecchio, Brooks' CEO, pointed out another spring entry, the company's move into better denim with five-pocket premium Supima denim jeans, which are made in America and retail for $148.

Other newsmakers of the season, according to Simon Kneen, creative director, include "lots of alternative neckwear," such as bow ties and cravats, as well as a hybrid blazer/outerwear jacket that zipped down the front.

On the clothing end, stealing the spotlight was the Fitzgerald suit model named after JFK, repeating the same fitted two-button silhouette with narrowed lapels, slightly cropped length, side vents and plain front pants. Since being introduced last season, the suit has had solid sell-throughs, along with the Regent, a seven-inch-drop suit with a European silhouette, another new addition.

As expected, Brooks had its own special take on next season's Power Suit: a two-button, peak-lapel gray worsted with side vents, worn with a white-collar dress shirt.

Kneen's parting shot on the new Brooks Brothers: "It's about taste, not about matching things."

Re: The Brooks Look for Spring 2007

The only cravat I ever remember seeing, if a cravat is what I think it is, is the one/ones worn by Edward Fox in the original "Day of the Jackal"

I thought it was a neat look, I wonder if anyone does it anymore though, or is it, like the Nehru jacket, confined to the Day of the Jackal era.  I do think Fox's burgundy one with his tan (poplin?) suit looked fantastic, the perfect combination for whipping through France in an English or Italian sports car from that era.

n.b. I had a professor of Russian intellectual history several years ago in undergraduate, an exiled son of Hapsburgs, who occasionally supported a navy Nehru with his regimental ties. It was sort of like Sammy Davis reincarnated, except he knew six languages, had the characteristic hare lip, and spoke with an English accent.  He also did not sing or tap dance. He was, however, brilliant and always entertaining.  A fascinating man.

I think in the context of the article the cravat here stands in for the "ascot"?  Most here I suppose will be familar with the derivation of the word, and it's history from reading various style books like those from Flusser, et al.  I don't know that the cravat (loosely used by many, it appears, as simply neckwear) wasn't designed slightly different (or worn slightly) differently than an ascot is today.  I think it was wrapped several times around the neck in the 19th-c (if period sketches and new Brummell book is any indication) as opposed to being tied once and then tucked in to the shirt as I've seen nowadays.

I've got a few ascots myself.  I can't wear them seriously out-and-about, but I have worn one on a very rare occasion while entertaining at home:  dinner or cocktail parties, etc.  Always tongue-in-cheek, of course.  Though I always felt that the wine guy on SF -- Cuffthis -- pulled it off nicely.

A cravat in England.
An Ascot in America.

The same I think.
