I certainly do, though not as often as I used to. That vest looks very festive to me, to be worn to a party under a dark blue hopsack suit, or perhaps with coordinating green trousers (not TOO green, of course) and a brown or fawn coat, probably tweed.
Very nice.
Just looking at it I can smell Christmas Trees and taste a Single Malt.
Later on I may dance with somebody's shy daughter.
I only live to make other people happy.
Christmas & Tartan is a cliche I know... But one I've always been guilty of.
Nice waistcoat anyway.
Using your Tree of Style, FNB, your vest is on the Fogey/Old Boy branches, and I don’t think it could readily jump over to Hip. That is not a knock; it just means I would pair it with other garments of the same ilk. From my wardrobe, I would choose a large-scale black and white herringbone tweed jacket (approx. 16oz. goods, three-roll-two button, side vents, bellows pockets); medium grey flannels (full cut, high waisted, double forward pleats, cuffed); deep blue royal oxford shirt (wide spread collar, barrel cuffs); solid hunter green wool/silk challis tie (knotted four-in-hand); yellow cashmere OTC socks; dark brown sued bluchers (three eyelet, narrow round plain toe); paisley silk pocket square (red/green/yellow on navy ground).
I've often seen odd vests, particularly during the holidays or during the fall and winter seasons on the East Coast (North). Never indulged really, but I like them. Sometimes I think that gold buttons on the tartan vest a bit much.
I like the backless formal vest. And would like to get one made.
First off I have been lurking for a while and I have really enjoyed the wit and wisdom of this forum!
Regarding the waistcoat pictured above, I have a similar one that was made for my wedding. I had 4 solids tailored a couple of years ago, and I do wear them both with suits and odd jackets/trousers:
grey with silver buttons
cream with cream buttons
charcoal with black buttons
camel-hair with gold buttons
I also had a grey flannel 3-piece made last year. My tailor tells me he only has one other customer who ever orders vests/waistcoats. I think many find them warm, fussy or both.
I could use some help with one little problem. My suits are all (with one exception) tailored exclusively for braces/suspenders, while all my odd trousers take belts. I am not thrilled about the "buckle-bulge" the belt buckle creates under the waistcoat. Any suggestions?
I suppose I could tie them up with an old hockey lace, this being the Great White North and all ...

Thanks, Horace -- will try slimmest belt-buckle I can find. I guess if it cannot be seen under the vest, then the shoe/belt rule no longer applies?
