Re: How Low will it Go? (Dow touched down to 7882 so far)

Its all very depressing, time to click into survival mode and carry on, in the hope that you will not become one of the ragged unemployed.

Greece is starting to go, ripe for an overthrow. In Portugal 25% of the vote was for the communist party. Italy, that could be really interesting. Southern Ireland hasn't really hit home yet, but it will, they're taking the austerity measures very well, that's because a lot of them are still on their notice periods.  The UK will carry on, reduced, diminished, grim in fact. A whole nation's economy based on housing speculation and property ponzi schemes, whilst the means to create real wealth has been laid to waste.

The public must pay, and particulary future generations, ungrateful bastards, whadda' ya' want for nothing?  Prime real estate, a future?  A home, a home?!

In the future, you will be lucky and privileged to have a job.

Of course, this is only the West, Brazil is booming. But take a look at the favelas and the fact there is no viable middle class, looks exactly like it did before and always will.

Welcome to the new world order.

The good news is that the West is beginning to awake, and America at least, is making moves, already evident, in bringing industry home.

Of course, the Germans never made the mistake the Brits and the Yanks did, but that's another story.

Globalisation is dead. 'Effing great, the fables of the reconstruction are about to begin.

Albeit the UK, hangs on to the destructive belief that banking is all, as it continues to suck the marrow out of the sinews of the world economy.

Re: How Low will it Go? (Dow touched down to 7882 so far)

It's relevant to me because I suspect it's indicative of the debasement of the dollar, and of coming realization in the US of high inflation, brought on by the mad Keynesian policies of the last 20+ years.  In other words, it's a direct marker of the financial weakness of the US, as the Dow is of its strength.

Of course it could have plenty of other explanations, not the least of which would be yet another bubble.  You only now it's a bubble when it pops.  Right now however, it is one data point that confirms to me my economic analysis.

Whatever the explanation one wants to give to the phenomenon, anyone who dismisses as insignificant a 400%+ gain over 10 years, and a 50% gain since 2008, would be blinding themselves, IMHO.

(The amount of gold in computer hardware is completely immaterial by the way.  The demand for gold is driven in its majority by investors, and to a much lesser extent by jewelry.)

Interesting views.

You will of course forgive me for thinking the high prices of gold are due to investing by paranoid right wing nuts who think that gold will actually be worth something after society collapses. I have personally met a few people like that and they really believe that they have made the right investment.

Of course.  Most people who don't agree with my politics think my economic analysis/viewpoint is nuts too, and I think most gold bugs themselves are nuts.

It's hard to have a rational discussion about economics without involving politics.  That why objective data points like the price of gold are important - even though they could mean nothing more than a bubble, who knows.  It's flirting with $1,350 right now in Asia.  It's fascinating.

I don't think society will collapse, but if it does, lead will be more important than gold.  Dreadful idea.

Re: How Low will it Go? (Dow touched down to 7882 so far)

One thing to keep in mind about inflationary crises is that they are never foreseen by the majority of people.  One day nobody thinks that the money is debased, the next everybody is panicking and buying bags of dried beans.  The day after an inflationary crisis starts, every scholar claims that the writing was on the wall and that the crisis was obvious - but only marginalized individuals manage to see that before it starts.
