Been talking to a friend of a friend & this name popped up.
I wonder if it rings any bells with forum members here?
I think I've got the name right. It was one of the places on 'The List' for English Ivy fans visiting New York back in the day. I think it was a '60s place.
Thanks for any help at all -
te.

Thanks Marc - I'll check the location & get back to you.
I think in the 60's they did 'American cut' interpretations of English clothes and so the place was of interest along with Brooks et al to Ivy League fans.
Well I asked... & the answer is 'Could have been'.
The THEORY is that John Simon's 'Squire Shop' was a nod to this place. Only JS himself or Tofeeman will know for sure on that score...
JS's later 'Village Gate' shops gave a nod to the Jazz club of that name as we know from Paul Gorman's 'The Look' (Highly Recommended!).
But I'm wondering if it all kinda leads on to each from the other - 'Village Squire' results in 'Squire' (In an old butcher's like the US import 'Mayfair' Shop in Paris earlier on in the '60's)... 'Village Gate' has links to the Jazz club & the other half of the 'Village Squire' name...
It all seems to be...
I dunno...
You can IMAGINE this London guy really into American clothes going EVERYWHERE & picking up ideas while doing 'The Knowledge' about his chosen style and producing... A unique contribution to the history of the spread of the Ivy League style and also to English Menswear retailing...
Or is it all a collection of coincidences?
(Dunno)
