The Shetland: Why Does It Seem So Perfect?

Is there anyone who positively despises them?  I've had five and still own three.  Only self-restraint prevents me from searching for more (and, as Hepcat will tell you, the missus!).  As the nights draw in, you know...

Almost.

BHS low rent garment from earlier decades. I  can't understand all the fuss about them.

Not too heavy, not too light. It pairs well with a variety of trousers. It looks great underneath a herringbone. Lots of colors. Over here in the Colonies it doesn't have the reputation of being low brow. These days, it is likely to provoke the question, "why are you dressed up?"

Love 'em! One grey, one navy, one light blue, one light greenish, two oat meal, one of them with a nice argyle pattern (from Rip, thx!)... all crew necks.

as stated above, they`re versatile, they're warm... great sweaters!

I loves 'em - especially with saddle shoulders. Great with jeans and dessies, or proper trousers and a loafer or brogue, over an OCBD. Look good with a duffle on cold days. I've got one in a mid-blue, one in a lovely autumnal rust and I'm waiting for one on back order in a light grey. I've also got a great NOS v-neck shetland in fawn - saddle shoulders, and with short body, so the waist ribbing sits on the waist band of the trousers - (Marks and Spencers!). Looks great under a herringbone sack.

Re: The Shetland: Why Does It Seem So Perfect?

I've run out of them. Where do I buy them in London? I do not want to shop on-line. I want to go in a shop, greet the assistant, talk about the weather, smile, interact, look at the goods and hopefully make a purchase. But since the demise of Westaway and Westaway and J.Simons where, in London, can I find them?

They are not as bad as polo necks. Wear once and it is baggy at the neck. It is rarely cold enough for a polo neck especially once you are indoors.

Thanks B.O.B : I had considered those shops but have always assumed their customer base was 100% nebbish tourist and thus they were expensive and poor quality, offering packaged 'Ye olde England (Scotland)' bullshit, but you're probably right, worth the scrum.

I like the simplicity of the Shetland crew-neck.  I almost always wear a white Brooks OCBD and jeans or chinos.

Re: The Shetland: Why Does It Seem So Perfect?

Thanks again B.O.B but I cannot buy anything from a website that ugly and they also offer such a crappy range of colours - basically variations on sludge. I mean come on - I wanna get laid now and again you know. And I realise that a sensible crewneck shetland is unlikely to get the ladies dropping their drawers but if I go too beige than I may as well chop my gonads off.

I think knitwear looks great in off-white, natural, beige or tan - if you're wearing jeans or dark trousers. I can't wear blue knitwear with jeans - too much of a wall of blue (unless either the jeans are very faded or the knitwear is a very light blue). Likewise off-white knitwear with chinos - the wall of beige! A light grey Shetland with dark Levis is a good look.

Re: The Shetland: Why Does It Seem So Perfect?

Nah the neck's all wrong on those shetlands. Too wide. The proper old ones had a thin spindly neck, a different look all together. I could buy naff stuff like these at M&S. Who still makes the proper ones that Westaway and Westaway used to sell? I'll try and find a picture to illustrate my point.
