Alligator

Was this brand a deliberate rip-off of Lacoste?

Re: Alligator

le tigre was my favorite. the crappy, ill fitted lacoste ripoff, not the crappy, ill-fitted tone-deaf lesbian punk outfit.

Re: Alligator

I remember that 1966 posted a picture of a Lacoste - Alligator collaboration somewhere... I think it was a G4 type jacket.

Re: Alligator

until its marketing revival, a surprising number of americans thought lacoste was called "alligator".

Re: Alligator

I have a G9-esque jacket with an Alligator label, "tailored in Japan", with the embroidered croc on the tit. No mention of Lacoste.

Shamrock - Alligator is older isn't it? I'm sure I have seen 1950s coats and nice ones too.

Re: Alligator

I always thought that 'Le Shark' took some beating.

Just for the sheer awfulness.

Robbo what a fucking wanker you are.

Re: Alligator

'Alligator' raincoats, as featured in The Book, look 'andsome.  Real good Boom Years stuff I'd have thought.  Like London Fog.  Cheap and conservative-looking?

Re: Alligator

I have an Alligator G9 knockoff with an all black label. Alligator print style is exactly the same as the 1966 posters label. No Lacoste on label. Label says made in Philippines. Was given to me as a gift approx. 1972-3. Wore like iron. Must have been washed more than 200 times. Still looks good on outside but inside lining is starting to fray a little.

Re: Alligator

Over here - unfortunately - people would simply assume it was Lacoste, rather than anything more obscure or interesting.  The fact of its being hard-wearing is appealing.

We are indebted to you for these postings.

Re: Alligator

I have a izod lacoste harrington which is a near exact copy (vice-versa perhaps) of that same jacket (except made in Sri Lanka). Quasi-madras lining exactly the same. Although, weirdly, I think it gives very different washing advice! It's far too small and short for me, so it's never worn, but the lining is a nice touch.

Re: Alligator

That's a lovely jacket, Johndnorth. Thanks for all the pics that you are posting on the threads. Now, that little stitched logo is definitely a Lacoste one - the American tie-up between the Alligator and Izod Lacoste brands of course exists but I've never been able to work it out. I think that someone posted some info a thread here about it some time back. Maybe one of our American contributors can shed a little more light!

Re: Alligator

How is it that Lacoste shops always look so uninviting?

Re: Alligator

I know. Very sterile. Even the Paris ones. And I'm a fan. The only really inviting one that I've ever crossed the threshold of was in Cyprus; air-conditioned to the point of being chilly on a mind bogglingly hot day. And no purchase made!

Re: Alligator

I have high hopes of encountering this, sooner or later, in an Americana-oriented 'vintage' shop.  Saw Izod a couple of weeks back and it took me straight back to this era of 'Talk Ivy'.  Looking for a raincoat now in navy.

Re: Alligator

A search on Ebay still turns up a few of their coats, plus a rather obvious-looking 'Lacoste' 'arrington.  UK Ebayer is selling something quite interesting as being from the 1990s.  Hmm.

Picked up a 1960s dogtooth Alligator raincoat a few years back.
