Good constitution = no need in bespoke?

Hello all, my virgin post on this island.

I got this idea that if you have a good body shape, right proportions, posture, slim limbs, flat belly etc. you actually do not actually need to have your suits made bespoke for you.

Correct suit models/fits off the rack will fit you quite well, and the difference between bespoke and non-bespoke will not be noticeable.

Now, would that lead to the conclusion that bespoke is designed to disguise any disadvantageous parts of a body is a different topic to discuss.

Bespoke is a want not a need. Your paying for the experience, the time involved to make it and the luxury of picking your own cloths, trims and linings.

The techniques involved in true bespoke tailoring are quite different from those used in series production. Bespoke done right will always fit better, regardless of body shape.

While this bears no relation to physics, a basic thought experiment will answer your question.  Take any sport with which you have familiarity; swimming is excellent for the purpose as the minimal gear shows the physique clearly.  All participants at a high level are in excellent physical shape.  Shoulder widths differ as does the slope of the shoulders.  Some are long-waisted, some short-waisted.  Some have muscular thighs and others have longer and leaner limbs.  For those with identical chest measurements, some will be quite thick from front to back, and some will be narrow, but wide.  Hip width and circumference will also vary for people with the same chest or waist measurement, and so on.

If you are a manufacturer, which of these athletes do you design your suits for?  If you fit one of them well, you have guaranteed that the others will not get a good fit without alteration.  If you decide to take the middle ground on all of the various fit parameters, how many people in the population actually have that exact physique without some significant deviation somewhere?

Overlaid on this is the actual construction phase where a quality bespoke tailor cuts the garment differently and then builds in a shape that fits even your athletic ideal physique even better.

That said, it is still difficult to argue for bespoke as a "need"...

People who are in good shape tend to look good in a lot of clothing.

All blocks are cut for regular bodies.

No one has a regular body.

Therefore, all rtw clothing requires some alteration. Bespoke should not (although it often does) require alteration.

Whether you 'need' bespoke is really a question about how comfortable you feel in clothes which do not fit as well as they could. The answer will be different according to the individual's preferences. And probably their pockets - it's amazing what can be borne when one can't afford the alternative.
