The English attachment to socks may derive from the Norman invasion. Norman knights were fully clothed and remained so after the conquest to distinguish themselves from the bare legged barbarians on the fringes of Britain, whom it took them several generations to subdue. Hose or socks became the mark of a Christian gentleman, which is especially ironic because considering that at the time of the invasion in 1066 the Normans were only recent converts to the church and renegades (albeit suspect ones) from their Norse adventurism. It may be that the Normans in an attempt to be viewed as respectable by the nobility of more settled western lands were trying to be plus-chretien-que-les-chretiens and dandying themselves up with items like hose to cover up some of their lingering barbarities.

I can heartily recommend kemal's Viccel socks. (see his post above) I have around 15 pairs now and no problems with them.
All mine are over the calf - he has mid calf ones too.
I find the wool/silk ones a bit thinnish, even in winter weight, for my liking (I'm not a fan of the sheer style dress socks look although I know some prefer it) but the new line of thicker woollen ones are about right and certainly not thick by normal standards. His service is great and friendly.
As a bonus they are Australian Wool.
If you go to ask Andy or SF and use those links there is a 20% discount on already cheap socks.
(You can however show your moral superiority and disdain of AAAC and SF and the looking for bargain mentality and go straight to Viccel.com and buy at full price )
