^But wasn't the topic of the source of the Nile the whole crux of the falling-out between Speke and Burton? I think nobody would deny that Burton was the more complex, intelligent, interesting and accomplished individual. The fact remains, Speke was right, Burton was wrong. I hope I'm not being obtuse about this.
^As to the question of Speke's death, suicide or accident, it seems to me entirely possible that it was an accident. Speke was no doubt distracted with thoughts about the upcoming debate that afternoon, and when you're handling firearms, it is always very prudent to pay attention to the business at hand. This would apply much more emphatically if Speke had been using a muzzleloading gun, as he most probably would have been in 1864.
Frankly, Burton has always struck me as acting like a jealous hoho-bitch in the whole affair, especially after Speke's expedition with Grant.
Article on renaissance in hats in the NYT

Yes, good article: Armani and his goons do not help the cause though.
I own a few but I don't usually wear all of them. I, too, have my personal favorite.
As one with less hair now than in my teens, I wear hats in the winter it varies between Harris tweed caps, an Irish tweed or a wool Tilley hat.
In the summer, it is either a lightweight Tilly, or a Panama.
Living in the sunniest town in the UK, I have according to my Doctor sustained 'sun damage' consequently headgear is a necessity, I find it too cold not to wear a hat in the winter, so I have a narrow window about April when I can go bareheaded without burning the scalp.

So Macabee, what is the sunniest town in the UK and I suppose that you will say "Skegness".
Eastbourne
Wha - ha ha ha ha!! imagine one of those laughing boxes - actually Eastbourne is a nice - sorry - naice - place.
I now wear caps and sun hats in (protect my bald patch) from Bates. Bates is around 30% to 40% cheaper than Lock's for the same hats.
g - I blame my father and mother and watching too many Carry On Movies, too much Two Ronnies, Mel Brookes, Get Smart, Are You Being Served, My Word, Goodies, Goons, ..... and .........VIZ comics
Theres something very satisfying about doing the obvious lame smutty pun when others only think it.
Ever since I saw a Two Ronnies sketch where they mispronounced Cynthia as Snythia - I've had trouble - I even accidentally did it once in a very inappropriate context with a snooty Cynthia - freudian slip - didn't end well.
I went to school with a Hancock = Fingerdick, Melissa the Kisser, Sue the Screw, Richard Cranium, ......................
I can still describe someone as a Merchant Banker in a meeting.
My son once asked me if fathers go to a Special School to learn Dad's Jokes - you like some pie with that sauce son?, cereal with that sugar?
I wear beanie hats whenever I feel like wearing them. I avoid other hats like fedoras, though.
