I was in New York when Tito Puente and Celia Cruz were playing Carnergie Hall, made the mistake of going to a restaurant to listen to a midget who had unsuccessfully crossed the style of Miles Davis with the apathy of late Chet Baker. Not the best move.

A great find! A quirky but great live recording of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue by Leonard Bernstein conducting the LA Philharmonic from the piano. This has to rival Andre Previn’s version with the LSO.

And the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story on the other side are also very good.

Heard Hayes Carll doing stuff from his new record on Imus this morning. He is the legit heir to the outlaw country movement, and as such will never get squat from the country music establishment.

Contemporary country, for the most part, simply grafts a line about a pickup truck and a pedal steel guitar onto standard pop arrangements. Add big hat, Wranglers and an enormous belt buckle to taste.

Just a youtube link....

Tommy Dorsey playing `I'm Getting Sentimental Over You'.

Beautiful lyrical style. Not many of the young guns have that ability anymore. l still play the old style. Playing the simplest stuff is always the hardest, that's why many of the young horn-guns fail now. The aim is to make a simple silly tune like `bar bar black sheep' or `twinkle twinkle little star' sound awesome and interesting, it's not easy to do.

You either play your horn to worldclass levels or you give it up. l have no time for musicians who are less than great.

Mary Gauthier - best drinking song for years::

Some of the cleverest simple lyrics in a country song in years:

Chicken TV dinner
6 minutes on defrost, 3 on high

A beer to wash it down with
Then another, a little whiskey on the side
It's not so bad alone here

It don't bother me that every night's the same
I don't need another lover
Hanging 'round, trying to make me change

Max,

That's the way I felt hearing Ella Fitzgerald for the first time -- everybody else sounded out of tune for a while after that.

Bought a miniature pack of The Wild Geese Irish whiskeys, considering the awful and contrite marketing blurb, the potential for them to be awful was high. Actually, not bad, nevertheless why I am drinking a blend when I have an unopened bottle of Balvenie 14 year Golden Cask enticing me to superlative quality?

Re: What Music Are You Listening to at the Moment...[AKA the Music thread]

A number of new acquisitions on Vinyl: One work new to me worth the listening was Symphnoie Espagnole by Lalo, recorded in the late 70’s with Itzhak Perlman on fiddle and the LSO conducted by Previn.

But the star this evening was a recording from the mid 60’s on RCA Victor (“Dynagrove”) “The Worlds Greatest Marches”, mainly classical but a couple military. One side recorded by the Boston Symphony under Leinsdorf and the other by the Boston Pops under Fiedler. Very good musically and technically, great sound stage and a lovely rendition of Marche Slave. A good example of what Vinyl can sometimes offer.

And a very nice bottle of Rioja.

I generally don't like pop music but the songs of the Beautiful South are incredibly original. Paul Heaton is a genius and his solo albums have some great songs too.
