lnternet explorer + Crazy browser being invaded by the big nasties

WARNING

Both of those browsers (related to each other) are being heavily focussed upon by bad folk wishing to con you out of money. These people are planting nasty trogans all throughout sites, so when you are using C.B or I.E and come across these links your computer will go down immediately and nothing will work. lt shuts down the browsers, any anti-virus/trogan programs you have and can even go full on and wipe all softwear packages, and quickly fills your computer with their company pop-ups. First you get one pop-up, then you get two after about a minute, then you get three after another minute, and then finally a big pop-up across the whole screan so you can't view pages using other browsers. Then comes all the viagra pop-ups (lol) that automatically open up on the dangerous Internet Explorer.

lf you use I.E or C.B you will run into this invasion problem very very quickly (i've been a victum 6 or 7 times in three weeks). The problem is, the anti virus pop-ups are fakes. They tell you that you have dozens of viruses that don't really exist. If you click on these pop-ups, things will even go more hay-wire. If you buy there anti virus package for hundreds of dollars, the problem will still continue because it's all fake, so they are pocketing hundreds by panicking people and offering nothing.

They also change the codes each day so updated computer anti-virus programs can't detect it. Even the best tech guys can't keep up with this, the changing of daily codes makes it impossible to combat. They get away with it because the host countries aren't doing anything about it, they have better things to do.

The invasion has really taken over in the last six months. lt's epidemic now. They target very popular sites and common searches, even a link to a funny joke Big Tony posted here wiped my computer completely out.

What internet browsers do you blokes use?

I use Firefox. I never use Internet Exploder because of the way it is tied into the OS. When I use a M$ product, I always use a user account, not an administrator account.

If the folks from IT can't rescue you, you'll probably have to go into safe mode to start reversing the damage. Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware usually handles the false AV problem.

McAfee's Site Advisor is good for identifying dodgy sites when you are conducting a search.

You do realise that none of this sort of weirdness is relevant to you if have a Mac (sorry if I sound like a stuck record)? I don't know why you MS users put up with this. I'd never heard of any this until Shooey's thread here.

The reason Macs aren't troubled (much) by this stuff is because so few people own them; if they were more common, you can be certain they would be targeted. That being said, I trawl around for lots of porn and stuff (using a PC) and only experience a virus attack once a year roughly, and it's always grabbed by the virus protector; the system never crashes or anything. I simply don't have the probs Shooey does.

Re: lnternet explorer + Crazy browser being invaded by the big nasties

I lost a friend once over OS preferences. She was obsessed with famous people having coitus and would click on any banner with the vaguest promise of taking her to a site where she could see more celebrities in delicto flagrante. She would get high, drink beer from a can and watch awful sitcoms while laughing loudly and pointing at the TV while I was ripping out her disease-riddled OS and installing Fedora Linux. I told her to look at what I was doing and that it was very important "yeah yeah whatever I'll figure it out". Then the next morning she called me crying because everything was new and different. I had nobody to blame but myself for that one.

Anyway I digress. A host file is easy to install and if kept updated regularly, will block a lot of crappy ads and nastiness across all your internet connectivity

Re: lnternet explorer + Crazy browser being invaded by the big nasties

shooey - I only have IE installed for the odd site that I must access that is stupid enough not to be HTML compliant. And then I write to their chief  web monkey telling them how myopic they are they are.

I've been using OPERA as my browser since 1996 or so. OPERA has led the way and other browsers are slowly caching up. IE is a piece of vulnerable shite. Firefox is nearly as good as OPERA these days. Opera was first with tabbed browsing and not having to open another whole instance of the browser to see another page.

For a start any browser other than IE is less vulnerable to nasties. Operating systems other than Windows are less vulnerable with any Linux variant being the best - still Linux isn't for everyone even though it has very newbie friendly variants these days that work like a charm. (Shooey - Linux is the hand stitched Norvegese triple soled fully brogued Budapesta top mutha gunboat of OSs)

I run AVG FREE anti virus on windows and FREE Spybot - Search & Destroy on-demand spyware and malware scanner. The home open wireless system runs 3 windows PCs/laptops - netbook and a MAC system.

Never had a virus or problem in last 3 years  or so.

I use two monitors on my Desktop - great for spreadsheet work or reading on one screen and writing on the other.

I run two HD inside my desktop with auto duplication of changed data to second HD every 10 minutes. Once a month I do a complete mirror os and all (not copy) of the HD to an external usb HD so I can completely rebuild in and emergency in about 10 minutes. Once a month I also burn a DVD of work and one of photos etc etc and throw it in the boot of the car and/or a drawer at work where it stays as insurance against fire theft etc.

Be very very careful about so called IT /Computer guys at the local or any other shop - they will tell you the only way is to blow away all your data etc and re-install - most of them are like the boot repair guy in the arcade at Greensborough who if you take your Vass gunboats in with a broken stitch will tell you the only fix is to rip off the sole and replace it with a glued rubber strip.

Most PC based stuff and repair isn't very difficult at all despite what these IT shonks say.

But you must back up your data and back it up regularly.

As I said I can do a complete wipe and install of all my software and data in about 30 minutes and I have all sorts of arcane software installed.

Re: lnternet explorer + Crazy browser being invaded by the big nasties

I have had long experience with macs - I first had them at a work place in the the early 80s - before that it was mainframes and an Osborn luggable with an acoustic coupler - ah those were the days (wipes tear from rheumy eye) and my offspring are graphic design /animation/filmaker types.

The problem with macs for me is that it cost me around $1800 to get in a mac what I can get in a PC for $900.

The part that really shits me is the nonsense mac dealers go on with - there is no competition amongst mac dealers as they are restricted by geographic area from competing with each other.

They have ridiculous prices on "mac approved" hardware such as hard drive - all hard drives are manufactured by a couple of companies in the world. A hard drive is by and large a hard drive - paying $300 for a "mac" hard drive that costs $90 as a normal hard drive is a bit much to take - same with RAM and other stuff. Plus they make macs almost impossible to upgrade anything yourself.

With PCs I want a 2 TB HD I just buy one unscrew case and plonk it in - no way with a mac. The cd/dvd drive has stuffed up in our big mac - its built in - so it would have to go to the rude arrogant Mac dealer for replacing with a "mac approved" cd/dvd player - min = $250. PC cd/dvd drive goes - I go out and buy one for less than $100 and plonk it in myself in 10 minutes.

And so on and so forth.

However other than the price issue and upgrading nonsense I have no other problem with macs. They are reliable and pretty bug free and now with a stable Unix OS - you can even run windows on them with VM ware.

Re: lnternet explorer + Crazy browser being invaded by the big nasties

The only reason I run windows instead of Linux with Open office etc - all FREE and open source btw - is that a lot of places I work with run windows only and have no idea of standards or compatibility issues.

If I get a document /spreadsheet/ presentation/ database from one who hasn't a clue and it wont open properly on my machine - or vice versa then the dumbed down place doesn't want to now its really their issue - I have to be able to conform.

Otherwise I'd be running linux and open source. My eeePC runs on linux etc.

I would also recommend having a live boot CD /DVD linux that will run the whole OS and applications off a CD/DVD - I carry one in my bag always - so that if your windows goes down or is infected you can plonk in the CD and run the machine from the CD/DVD player independent of whatever crap is on the hard drive of pc. That way you can rescue files from corrupted drives etc to a USB or send them over network or by email from inside the live boot linux programs.
