Just finished a bump and smoked a Nat Sherman MCD menthol cigarette. Currently listening to the song "Solitude" off "Master of Reality."

Gonna log off and go to sleep while watching "The Trip" with Steve Coogan in a bit...

Aimee Thanatogenous: An American would despise himself for living off his wife.
Dennis Barlow: Yes, but you see, I'm English, and we have none of these prejudices in the older and more developed civilizations.

Legendary jazz drummer Joe Morello, whose virtuosity and command of odd time signatures made him an integral part of the Dave Brubeck Quartet on such classic recordings as "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo a la Turk," has died at age 82.

Family members said Morello died Saturday at his home in northern New Jersey. A cause of death was not immediately available.

and in news that will be closer to Uncle Oswald's preferred intake:

Augustus Owsley Stanley III, who has been living in Australia since 1985, died in a road accident the other day.

Stanley is mainly referred to as the Drug Dude - and Cook - but in my book his great contribution to the sound and lighting of live concerts. Listen to some of the Dead's Live tapes (showing my age - tapes - well ok - CDs - well ok digital downloads) and marvel at how clean the sound is.

Re: What Music Are You Listening to at the Moment...[AKA the Music thread]

"It was a teenage wedding and the old folks wished them well"

Great short stories should have a  great first sentence.

Not all great songs do, but some first lines stand up well and signal a long and interesting back story.

Chuck Berry launches into the introductory line a few seconds after the music starts and every time I listen I'm looking forward to the story and wondering about teenage weddings I've known.

The bonus is that there are many good lines scattered through the song;

"You could see that Pierre did truly love the mademoiselle"

And a memorable chorus:

"'C'est la vie', say the old folks, 'it goes to show you never can tell'"

Re: What Music Are You Listening to at the Moment...[AKA the Music thread]

I love Promised Land how it powers on like an aircraft flight until touchdown - without any chorus or repeat lines.

http://www.lyricsdepot.com/chuck-berry/promised-land.html

My problem with Chuck is that I have a few recordings of very variable quality. It seems he re-recorded - or remixed - many of his songs for different labels or something and most are a lot worse than the originals.

I have the same problem with George Jones - I think George would re-record his songs every time he got off a bender and needed money or something.

So I have had to sift through a fair bit of George's trash or mediocre versions to get the good stuff.
