Re: On Being A Stylist...

So its arguable or likely that I will never get it unless I have already got it or had it lost it and forgot about it?

You may have it more than you realise.
Dress for yourself. Be true to your own taste.

Then you'll shine through!

Re: On Being A Stylist...

You know I fell it.   Going out to get checked for Cancer today....  Not sure what proper attire is for that but I felt just fine to tone it down with the most comfortable faded jeans, 20 year old peanut brittle lizzards with holes in the bottom and a logographed tee shirt of some kind and boy do I feel hot just the way I am ...

The wife things its great just to have me showerd and shaved during this cold snap as I have been a wooley bugger after 14 hours a day doing construction on the new hat shop....

Did I mention I smell good too...  No fragarace for that thread but some good old 'Manly" irish spring.   That may have caused this seeminly cancerous spot.   I hate to die so young feeling so damn old.

Re: On Being A Stylist...

Great posts Alex.  The attitude that comes from a foundation of knowing your references/influence/history really does set one apart from someone else wearing nearly the same outfit, but lacking that attitude.  That's probably the most important and underrated accessory a man can have, the ATTITUDE.

It's definitely a journey, seeing if the grass is greener on the other side, until you finally come into your own and rearrange all the pieces in a way that makes sense for you.

The great Stylists are indeed mythic.  You see them once in a while and wonder where they're going later, what they'll be doing tomorrow, because all indications are that it's something you want to be a part of.

Re: On Being A Stylist...

I think an aspect of style is that you have to dress in a way that expresses a ballence of who you really are and who you want to be. Someone once called this "Dressing above your class."

Re: On Being A Stylist...

Just a short anecdote on the need to look for the subtle details.

Long before I had heard of "original skinheads", I was working in a print shop and one of the senior guys was this small fellow who had short hair, Docs, harrington, and all the other gear. But it was very subtle, nothing "punk-ish", if you know what I mean. One day I asked him "I bet you're an old school skinhead?". He said, very quietly, yes he was. I never mentioned it again.

Again, it was very subtle, but I crossed into a new territory intellectually, on that day.

Since then, I look for the small things.

Re: On Being A Stylist...

"is this mod" is an unanswerable question in the direct sense.  The worst thing is when style gets categorized and therefore limited.  I don't like the concept of something "being mod" as it implies that there are rigid boundaries.  If you have the attitude, then you just know what makes your style "mod" and it could come from anywhere, any brand.

If Alex was wearing it, then yes, it's "mod as heck".

Re: On Being A Stylist...

So Mod is good ?  Trad is bad ?

I guess its not for me to get.   Spent a life time making hats and the largest suscess I ever had was doing bespoke.   Letting the client do the design as they knew the look.

The rest usually boring unless told to be creative.
