It seems as though many quality posters are beginning to post on this forum as opposed to the others. Is an exodus emminent?
Don't worry - I'm here to keep the quality down.
It'll all balance out.
I got a link to this site from a friend who knows I love Vintage Movies and Film Noir. This isn't what I expected but... here I am anyway.
Don't know bout an exodus anywhere, however, the thread brings up an interesting point.
Sir Thomas Gresham discovered the fact than in any ecenomy, bad coinage always drives out good coinage when both have the same face value. Now referred to by economists as Greshams Law, and is explained in the short version, saying that "bad money drives out good money".
Greshams Law can also be seen to operate quite clearly in almost any organization. A series of bad management decisions in any organization drives out good decisions, etc. You can see it in Dell, the US auto industry, etc.
To your point, in something like a forum, one can start out with excellent participants, but over time, if mediocre participants begin to dominate the landscape, the quality posters will depart.
I can't address SF. Place has always seemed to me, to be dominated by knuckle dragging mouth breathers.
In one of the other forums, it started out as the gold standard. The thread that Harris started on "American Traditional" was a masterpiece, IMO. The place drew a lot of people that were really interested in learning from others that were willing to share their knowledge.
Over time, the zeitgeist changed dramatically. An exodus? I don't really know. They just had an orgasm over there last week about having 250,000 or so members, or something like that. If it works for mgt, and the participants, maybe it's not an exodus. Time will tell.
On that ex Harris site they had a recent thread about formal shoes vs. dress street shoes when wearing a tuxedo. No one knew why you would opt for formal shoes: Formal shoes are light and flexible, with a thin sole and all leather heels. They are made for dancing.
To Get Smart's point...
I would have, perhaps, phrased it a little more delicately. Something along the lines of: "I read it somewhere and therefore I'm an expert."
Regardless, your point is received.
Btw, and just to be clear - I do agree with the overall premise that MB's such as AA have fallen off a bit and that MB's like this one have become better. I just don't think there's some sort of a witchhunt to silence good Posters going on.
I was banned from LL originally after pointing out the errors in a list of NY tailors posted by one of their members evidently highly sensitive to others suggesting his fallability. The dear boy was on the verge of a nervous breakdown when I critiqued one of his suits on another fora, showing a degree of fragility that did cause me to regret the incident, which contributed to my banning from that fora, too.

Is there an Exodus? Let's ask Bob Marley:
Jah come to break down 'pression,
Rule equality,
Wipe away transgression,
Set the captives free.
Exodus, all right, all right!
Movement of Jah people! Oh, yeah!
Sounds about right to my ears.
Hard to figure out. I remember when Bosthist left the other forum. He said a gentlemanly goodbye, and many members posted to the effect of how much they regretted his departure, and valued his contributions while he was there. I forgot about it until I got over here. After going back to the list of members over there, I find that his name has disappeared. Maybe because he, effectively resigned. Don't know.
Then there is the case os Misterman. He called a number of people that questioned the large number ties (in a polite way, I thought) douchebags.
His response to a another benign question was "blow me". Maybe for that, and maybe for something else, "banned " appears under the "misterman" name in in the member list.
Moving forward. He had post #1 recently as OldMC. In that post he identified himself as the former "Misterman".
I'm in the camp that doesn't much care how they run their store, it's their business. Just difficult to understand.

Purely a point of view, but I think you'll find misterman knows fine well what he's doing and is doing it deliberately.
The Trad's 'ownership' of Press is not something the guy can be too pleased with. It's his vision not theirs that he's putting forward for as long as he's doing his current job. If the Trads want to call the shots at JP they should train as designers and try to get employment there.
As I've said before - Press aren't doing 'Trad'.
