Re: Worst fight ever over Style/Fashion?

Does the jealous derision of others count as a fight?
I've been places where the guys are almost ready to attack me-until I stand up, that is-because they're so angry about what I have on. I never understand why...until their GFs come to me in private like I'm the Dalai Lama, and ask for the sources of my clothes because they want their BFs kitted out in the same way. However, when they find out that I design nearly all of my own clothes and have them made by a local tailor here in Jersey...a good time's not had by any. It's almost like they were somehow scorned, and we all know how that story ends...

Re: Worst fight ever over Style/Fashion?

Ed, in my old neighborhood, any man who wore those colors and walked like he knew he was "The MAN" would be "forced" to sleep with LOTS of women, because, to them, any man with the cojones to wear that IS A MAN, and therefore, deserves a harem!!! Individuality counted for a lot with the ladies of my early association. They don't really trust the navy suit/white shirt/red tie look. To them, he's hiding something...Enron, anyone?

Re: Worst fight ever over Style/Fashion?

Ren,

Back in the 1980's during the burlap potato sack craze that was spurred by the popularity of Dexy's Midnight Runners I was accosted by gang of rival teens.  They mocked me for my peasant like clothes.  These ruffians were sporting pastel colored Izod polo's, white trousers and madras jackets.  One was wearing penny loafers and the others were wearing boat shoes. They pummeled me and remarked that if I wanted to find them they would be summering in Newport.

I haven't seen them since.

Re: Worst fight ever over Style/Fashion?

I have the worst fights with my wifes family.  My wife insist I not only have sex with her but also seveal other beautiful women so she will be confident of my man hood.   I personally hate having to have so much sex with so many beautiful women and really hate it on the nights she insist I do it with mutiples at once.   The fights however are always with her relatives that do not agree with her and and some of the child support issues from the couple dozen children this has propogated.  I just need to stop dressing so nice on those evenings off and quit accepting the advances of all the young ladies at the 20 somthing bible class I teach.  This would stop this foolishness !

Re: Worst fight ever over Style/Fashion?

I have a good friend who insists he's "anti-style" and dresses relatively poorly. His wife once begged me to help him improve his style. The one area in which he was anxious to solicit my advice was dress shirts, as he's also a "salaryman" who has to wear a suit and tie every day. He complained that RTW did not fit him and asked for shirting suggestions.

I suggested BB as a place to get decent custom shirts for only $XX, which he immediately dismissed as too expensive. Then I suggested -- yes, you guessed it -- Jantzen, and introduced him to the website. He perused it excitedly for a while, and I thought perhaps I was making some headway in raising his style-quotient. But then he remarked that everything was 100% cotton and that he wouldn't get any shirt that wasn't a no-iron poly-cotton blend. There's just no way he would consider ironing a shirt or spending the money to have his shirts professionally laundered and pressed. He was completely intractable on the matter.

That was the discussion where I drew the line and refused ever to speak to him about sartorial matters again. His wife's entreaties have since fallen on deaf ears.

Re: Worst fight ever over Style/Fashion?

My favorite fight over fashion was a thread on styleforum on the tassel loafer.  Someone named Prisquen (sp?) who was either for or against (I don't remember which) left in a huff when it was said that the tassel loafer was appropriate for "dressy" suit occasions.

I looked for the thread but couldn't find it.  Only one with me, Shooman, Manton, and Stylestudent arguing the merits (if any) of the Tassel.

Re: Worst fight ever over Style/Fashion?

This relates, in a way, to my response on the “Clothing Horrors” thread; however, it does show that my mistake related there proved of some use.  Ten years ago, one of my closest friends asked me to be his best man.  This friend is twenty years younger than I, and had often asked for and followed my advice regarding clothing.  The wedding was a midday affair, and the bride and her attendants were to be in traditional gowns.  In response to the groom’s request for guidance on proper attire for himself and the groomsmen, I told him that morning coats or strollers would be splendid, but that solid navy suits, white shirts (he could even provide tasteful cufflinks as gifts) and wedding ties would do the job admirably.  The bride would have none of it; she wanted black tie.  This woman is a highly educated professional, so I backed my suggestions, and my horror at her choice, with reams of documentation.  Things got pretty testy.  Ultimately the groom chose marital accord over propriety, and I found myself standing up at noon in full dinner kit.  I consoled myself by remembering the shirt that I had worn a quarter century earlier and knowing that if the reception continued past 6:00 all would be right with the world.
